I know a little about affordability at the supermarket. My family ran a meat market between the tracks and the river. Nobody lived around that industrial area, but you drove there if you wanted three pounds of hamburger or sausage for a buck, and people did.
While little markets are pretty much a thing of the past, people still drive a distance to save a dollar. Food is competitive, with markups in the 5% or less range. Throw in the fact that the commodity is perishable, and there are no vocations from the grind. Maybe that's why I publish this blog (Molovinsky On Allentown) every weekday, including holidays.

It is true that biggest jump in prices did come during the Biden administration, As a former self employed retailer you also know that prices decline much slower than rise. Most like rising prices, as you can sell lower previously purchased goods at the higher prices. Of course this applies to perishable foods the least.
ReplyDeleteThe rate of rise in prices is declining but a actual decline in prices usually only comes in the midst of economic downturn.
That will likely happen and of course it will also all be Trump's fault.
We can expect a savior in the democrat party and soon be subjected to asset taxes, price controls and all things to make it worse and of course it can all be blamed on Trump.
Are you advocating that the answer is coupons and subsides?
ReplyDeleteanon@7:09: No, but the promises of better times won't help at the grocery store. Then again, it was a speech for Trump groupies and professional partisans. Hopefully Trump will stop the indiscriminate tariffs, and the marketplace will adjust to some stability, and then competition will help with affordability.
ReplyDeleteThe change in administrations has already HELPED at the grocery store.
DeleteIt was just earlier in the year that democrats were blaming Trump for egg prices approaching $10/dozen that actually got there under Biden.
Trump policies fixed that, and democrats now avoid specifics and cry about the vague concept of “affordability”, since specifics generally don’t support their claims.
anon@8:55: The voters are getting sick of the Biden Excuse. Eggs may be down, but everything else is up. Republicans wanting to be re-elected are starting to stand up. We'll see how smart or stupid Mackenzie is in the coming months.
ReplyDeleteYou better hope that Trump doesn't go off from the teleprompter tonight, only delusions come natural to him.
DeleteBiden, Biden, Biden- Trump needs a new word . And neither Trump nor Vance could tell you what is going on at a grocery store. Affordability is not a democratic hoax. Vance’s silly talk would have been better targeted if it came from the new Giant store. Thankfully I don’t have to buy any products from Uline. I’d be interested in knowing how they have dropped their prices.
ReplyDeleteanon@11:13: The Uline location was very ironic . The warehouse is beyond enormous, must be seen to be appreciated. They sell the cardboard boxes used by Amazon, that put American retail out of business. If you ever buy anything from Uline, they send you a fifty lb. catalog four times a year, which you cannot stop, no matter how often you request cancellation from their list.
ReplyDeleteSo now we have to trash a local employer because they hosted the sitting VP at their workplace?
DeleteThis is the sickness that comes from TDS. It’s the loss of all rational thought and logic for just petty political gain against Trump.
Why don’t you tell us what local businesses are socially acceptable and which ones should be put out of business? That’s what you’re trying to do.
