Ryan Mackenzie Stands Up

Ryan Mackenzie has stood up and signed on to a petition intended to extend the ACA subsidies. Although the petition was sponsored by Democrats, he joined several Republicans who joined the effort...The petition now has enough signatures to force a vote on the measure.

In the recent past, Trump and Company has referred to those who cross party lines as traitors, and has threatened to primary them. On that score, I can see no primary challenge coming Mackenzie's way.

I do believe, however, that his willingness to put his constituents ahead of a party agenda will help him in November. He has pretty much assured the vote of this old blogger.

  1. You must like throwing money away on bad policy.

I’d be fine with Mackenzie splitting with his party for something that makes sense, but this reeked of a frightened politician trying to score political points. Naturally, we’d all pay it if it had passed.

This was a profile in cowardice, not courage.

  2. anon@1:07: Mackenzie clearly stated that he would prefer to vote for the Republican ideal plan, which would have reduced health care costs, making it affordable for everyone. HOWEVER, that plan wasn't on track, and millions of Americans are facing no help with existing insurance in the real marketplace.

    1. He had all the power imaginable.

He could have demanded changes to the democrat proposal to save tax dollars, or at least a shortening of the extension of the subsidies (perhaps to only a year or two)) to force both parties to work on a solution sooner rather than later. Instead, he voted for the democrat proposal as is.

I now believe he will be a one-term Congtessman, though not for the reason you think. He may have gained YOUR vote, but lost many others in the process, including mine.

  3. He may have forced a vote, but that doesn't guarantee a win.

  4. anon@6:02: He didn't vote for anything, but signed a petition to have a vote. The Republican proposal doesn't have enough support to pass before the subsides expire.
Are you, who doesn't have the moxie to sign your name, going to run in the primary against him?
Are you going to vote for his Democratic opponent in November?

    1. Oh, brother! You do realize the Lone Ranger did all he could to remain anonymous. Sometimes, that's justified. "Hi Ho."

    2. I have received three other comments on being anonymous, but only this one will be printed. you(s) will have to place multiple anonymous comments on being anonymous elsewhere.

  6. Mackenzie signed on to a discharge petition that'll eventually allow for a vote on a clean 3 year extension of the ACA subsidies. That's true. However, that vote was announced to not be scheduled until January, after the health insurance premiums increase and open enrollment periods have largely closed.

Nothingburger of a vote from him imo. He's still too much a coward to buck his party in a meaningful way and will go down in November 2026 to Bob Brooks.

  7. Higher product prices are mainly the result of manufacturer decisions. The tariffs have minimal effect. In many cases, the manufacturer simply eats the increase to not lose market share. Remember, a tariff is only levied against non-American components, usually NOT the entire product.

Sellers will typically set their price at whatever the market will bear. Right now, American consumers are being programmed to blame any increase on an added tariff even if no tariff has been set at all.

Shelf prices will not come down until competition from an alternate option comes into play. Until, the seller loses market share, don't hold your breath on seeing a reduction in what you pay.

Best advice, stop paying the price you believe to be too high. There are lesser priced brands, like at Aldi, for example. For as cheap as eggs are right now, has your egg dish meal at Perkins come down?

    NO!

  8. BTW, Amy last fill-up at the pump (12/15) was at $2.679 per gallon.

Would I like it to be lower? Absolutely!

But it’s still a world below what it was under Biden and democrat energy policy.

That might not be what many want to hear, but it is reality.
