On The Waterfront

Many consider the 1954 classic, On The Waterfront, the best picture ever made. The history of the film is interwoven with the realities of that era. The screenplay, by Budd Schulberg, was loosely based on a Pulitzer Prize winning expose about organized crime on the docks. The film's director, Elia Kazan, had testified at the House Un-American Activities Committee, naming a few associates who had attended meetings with him years earlier.

In the film, Marlon Brando, is slowly convinced to testify against the crime boss who employed him. Kazan and Schulberg insisted on realism for the production. The movie was shot in black and white on the docks of Hoboken. Bodyguards of the crime boss, played by Lee Cobb, were actual former heavyweight fighters.

  1. Michael,

Did you see this in the new zoning laws that the city is trying to pass. I am shocked that the new zoning laws will allow Pigeon Coops. Whats next chickens and roosters?

    Section 1315.04 Page 111
    M. Pigeon Coops must meet the following requirements:
    1. A pigeon coop cannot be attached to any other structure, nor be placed on the roof
    of an existing structure.
    2. A pigeon coop is only permitted in the rear yard outside of the required principal
side and rear yard setbacks and be setback of 25 ft. from all property lines
    whichever is more restrictive.
    3. The maximum size shall not exceed 100 sq. ft.
    4. The coop shall be completely enclosed with wire netting or equivalent material
that will prevent pigeons from escaping its confines.

I know it has nothing to do with your blog post.

    Regards
    Don

  2. racing homing pigeons and raising show pigeons was a very popular hobby, there was even a special building for pigeons at the fairground. earlier this year a resident complained about a neighbor's pigeon coup. this must be a result of having no previous regulations on the matter.
