The Hamilton Street Bridge
The current Hamilton Street Bridge was completed in 1959, replacing the former steel trestle bridge. With the new Hamilton Street entrance ramp aligned further to the south, a small portion of front street and a few houses were vacated. Additionally, an entrance ramp was added from Union Street, which previously ended at Front Street. The photo above shows a portion of the earlier bridge and the former A&B meat packing plant, beyond their office building. The office building has been incorporated into the America On Wheels Transportation Museum.

do you have any pics of the "walking" bridge we walked across while the new bridge was being built? I lived on east side had to walk to Harrison Morton- the hanging walking bridge was scary on windy days. Also remember Girls could not wear Pants to school back then our dresses and skirts were super cold also we, or I, would run across the walking bridge to cross faster and the other kids hated me because I shook the bridge when I ran. Oh it was such a wonderul East Side Memory !!!!!
ReplyDeleteI remember walking on that tiny bridge too. It would bounce up and down and sway side to side.
