Drag Races At Queen City

During the 1950's, for a summer or two, city sanctioned drag races were held at the Queen City Airport. Dopey Duncan, radio personality and racing car enthusiast, was instrumental in organizing these events. The airport and large hanger seen in the background was built by Consolidated Vultee, to produce airplanes for the war effort.

  1. Queen City Airport (or Convair Field as it was originally known) has never really been developed after it was gifted by the federal government to Allentown after World War II.

Since 2000, Allentown has been developing into a major transshipment point with many warehouse fulfillment centers being built. All of them generate a massive amount of long-distance truck traffic. I know every time I visit the city, besides the barrels on I-78 east of Hamburg to Fogelsville, the sheer number of trucks on 78 and also Route 100 between Foglesville and Trexlertown is significant.

Queen City Airport could be developed into a freight/cargo airport for all of the goods that the trucks carry or supplement the road network to bring in additional wealth to the area.

  2. Drag races... HAH... heck, come downtown and see/hear them all day and all night courtesy of our "non policing" police department.... they could put Allentown in the black in a few weeks of enforcement!!! At least you can SEE a double parked car, but these road racers come out of nowhere... the bane of right on red turners and drivers exiting a parking space, and let us not forget the folks trying to sleep so they can get rested so they can go to work to pay the ever increasing taxes to support the obviously unconcerned "regime" running our now crap "turd world" city...
