Hit Job By Morning Call
After a three month investigation by the Morning Call, although The newspaper "could not determine what the complaint alleges, whether the investigation is open or if Nothstein has been cleared of wrongdoing", they still headlined the story of alleged sexual misconduct against Marty Nothstein. Although I have no horse in this political race, I can recognize dirty politics when I see it.. Nothstein described it as a hit job, and in that he is correct.
Nothstein followed up on the paper's hit job with a press conference Friday afternoon. In that conference he and his lawyer maintain that the paper was not interested in seeing affidavits from the supposed victims. They revealed that they had appealed to both Robert York and Terry Rang, to no avail, trying to prevent the meritless detrimental headline.
The headline is not unrelated to my recent post about the national editorials against Trump. Although I agree with those who find Trump's tongue too loose, newspapers are themselves loose and easy with journalism. When I recently wrote that the Morning Cal is for sale and protects local sacred cows, York contacted me about correcting the for sale portion, but wasn't concerned about the sacred cows.
Although I found the headline very unfair, I can only hope that it wasn't a conscious attempt to boost Nothstein's opponent at his expense. The paper did highlight his claims of unfairness in Saturday's edition. If Nothstein can manage to project himself as a media victim, and turn the sequence of articles into lemonade, remains to be seen.

My Dad always said, "You can't believe everything you read." Never has it been more true.
ReplyDeleteShocking that the paper would stoop so low to smear a Republican(note sarcasm). Marty's team missed a huge and necessary opportunity however by failing to get out in front of this story. They new the paper was working on a hit piece, they knew it would drop but remained silent until it did. Bad choice.
ReplyDeleteSadly politics isn't about the truth, it's about perceptions, the voters perceptions of the candidates and times. Winning teams shape those perceptions. Score this one, Lying Liberal Press 1 Team Nothstein 0
Vote straight R this November, really it's necessary.
Bernie O'Hare takes cheap character assassination shots like that all the time. The Secret Service could corroborate as much while pointing to 'my case' as a 'prominent' example. So why shouldn't The Morning Call be allowed to get in on some of O'Hare's obviously effective action? Meanwhile, if Marty Nothstein never did give a damn about O'Hare taking cheap shots at me - and he did not - then why should I give a damn if The Morning Call wants to sabotage the Olympic gold medalist's U.S. Congressional campaign beyond repair?
ReplyDeleteSeriously. If people walk away thinking bad things about Nothstein, why should I be concerned if the guy was a victim of an obvious hit job? To this very day, I still get lectured about sticks and stones. And reminded that if there had been the slightest bit of merit to the ludicrous allegations made by O'Hare, then the Secret Service surely would have picked me up if only for questioning and so I should simply just be happy that I was 'exonerated' while paying absolutely no mind whatsoever to 'public opinion'.
People like O'Hare and those all-caring, wonderful citizens down at The Morning Call are mostly likely going to remain who and what they are ... so maybe this Nothstein guy simply needs to just grow a thicker skin and immediately toughen up?
I think if it is okay when a nobody like me gets tossed under and then run over by the bus - and history has already shown that it is - then all will still be well when an important somebody like a prospective politician experiences pretty much the very same thing.
Respectfully,
ROLF OELER
First, they slandered and smeared this group - but I was not a member of that group so I said nothing. Then, they slandered and smeared another group - but I was not a member of that group, either, and so I said nothing. And so this vindictive pattern continued until, eventually, they slandered and smeared me - but, by that time, there was no one who had already not been slandered and smeared left to complain to.
ReplyDelete"How about that!" exclaimed broadcaster Mel Allen.
rolf, if you could refrain from recounting the o'hare/oeler secret service story any more, I would appreciate it.... you have repackaged it many times here on this blog already.
ReplyDeleteover at facebook it seems as if reactions to this story are somewhat partisan...the Democrats see nothing wrong with the Morning Call article
Mike,
ReplyDelete"Democrats see nothing wrong with the story". EXACTLY! They/Morning Call/Democrats got exactly what they wanted out of it, who doubts those headlines won't be the first or second mailer of the Wilde campaign? Very few of the voters know how phony the story is, and a lot of Democrats voters won't care if it is, Marty is a Republican and must be destroyed. Marty will be on defense on this story until election day.
The truth is,if this story/fiction had not presented itself to the media they would have had to be creative and invent something out of nothing, for instance did he ever drive anywhere with the family dog on the roof of his car,did he get a drunk driving citation driving his sister home from a party when he was 18? was he the cause of an employee of the velodrome's wife dying of cancer? Trump was the only Republican who understood all this fully and completely and he did what we are all taught to do on the playground, push back. He did and yes it was/is ugly, a fight always is, but the result is prettier than a surrender to bullies and evil.
Let's hope the Nothstein camp has learned this lesson.
One has to wonder how many more "Investigations" the Morning Call is working on against Northstein?
ReplyDeleteTit for Tat. A Childs game? So we'll all be blind and toothless. God help us.
