Ozzie and Harriet

The current census data on Allentown shows that the idyllic 50's is long gone by almost every measure.* Nearly 60% of mothers are unwed, and a quarter of them do not live in the same apartment for even a year. This year as the recession gets deeper, there are many thousands of children with young, poor mothers, not in a position to buy presents. Over 2,600 of them have applied to the Salvation Army for assistance this holiday season. While demand is up 18%, donations have decreased 50%. Those of us, in a more fortunate position, should consider donating to Toys for Tots or dropping a few dollars in the Salvation Army Kettle.

  1. Thanks MM, for choosing to discuss this topic, it is VERY timely. LUPO'S Beer and Ale and Project R.E.A.L. are collaborating to do Project R.E.A.L.'s 1st ANNUAL TOY DRIVE. (It's an unorthodox union needed in these unorthodox times) (smile) We had a GREAT turnout last night despite the weather and will continue collecting new/unused toys and monetary donations throughout this weekend. We will be distributing the items and money to other non-profit organizations in the LV area who will distribute them to the families in need. People tend to forget, non-profit organizations need help in order to support those in the community, too.
