A Peak Inside the Art Scene

In the late 1970's I operated Allentown Photographic, a custom darkroom, at 12 N. 8th St., in the old Strand Movie Theatre Lobby. As mentioned in an earlier post, Greg Weaver routinely hosted large gatherings and showings at his studio. Larry Fink was an up and coming photographer and Jett Ulaner Sarachek was taking her first photo's. Barnaby Ruhe began doing portrait marathons while Gary Hasey encouraged the jazz scene. There was no art park, no art district banners.
The above image is from a series a photographs I took for Channel 39 for a program entitled "Accent on Aging".

  1. Great photo. I hope you post more.

I'm very familiar with Barnaby Ruhe's action painting (we have an original) and Gary Hassay's improvisational jazz. I'm not a big fan of that kind of music, but it went well with the whole vibe back then.

It really hasn't been very long (around 5 years) since Open Space Gallery closed its doors. It's sad that there has been no replacement. Bethlehem has so many galleries.

I'd like to showcase local artists at my blog. Once I get my old slides put on a cd I can post my images.

  2. While I disagree with almost everything you say, I will give credit where credit is due.

    This is a great photo.

I think you would do the world more good if you chose to leave behind politics and commentary to get back into photography.

I wish that bastard had told me he was a photographer when I was trying to snap a picture of the Hamilton Street merchants this summer.

I for one, think this ugly world is a better place with MM in it. We have completely different political ideologies, but Mike really cares about his fellow man.

It's sad that he can't even post some of his photography without someone taking a shot at him.

  4. Mr. Damien said "I think you would do the world more good if you chose to leave behind politics and commentary to get back into photography."

Wow. I hope you were just kidding. That's just so low-brow Mr. Damien.

  6. MM:

Believe it or not, I happen to know a little bit about photography and composition in general.

In short, you are correct regarding your interpretation of my previous post.
