In 2010, I learned that Lehigh County had fast track plans to demolish the 1824 stone arch bridge by Union Terrace. Several decades earlier in 1980, Mayor Joe Daddona had the accompanying pedestrian bridge built, to insure the safety of both Union Terrace and Raub students.
Back in 2010, when I successfully defended the old Reading Road stone bridge, the steel on the pedestrian bridge was already rusty. Here we are over a decade later, and the city still hasn't painted it !!!
I was just watching a video of the mayor congratulating himself and the city workers on his victory. He said that they accomplished a lot, but there's still more to do. Mr. Mayor, may I suggest that the city spend a couple $thousand now and paint the steel beams? Or, you could wait until the steel needs replacing, spend $millions, but have a ribbon cutting.
The prep work before any paint is applied will be a massive undertaking.
ReplyDeleteHigh-powered calculators would go into full-fledged meltdown mode if they had to add up all the time this mayor has spent on ribbon cuttings and flag raisings...
ReplyDeleteYou want a paint job that costs thousands?
ReplyDeleteI’d be happy to see a few trash cans that would only cost hundreds, if that.
My suspicion is that neither of us will end up happy.
Thousands?
DeleteHow about tens of thousands before the environmental cost of containment for the sandblasting.
Ya’ snooze ya’ lose.
This won’t get done without a significant state grant.
It’s amazing that the covered bridge has rotted out yet.
Plastic 55 gallon drums are free for the taking.
DeleteThey don’t care what is written or said. They have absolute, uncontested political power and apparently for Allentown there’s no light at the end of that tunnel.
ReplyDeleteQuite true. Allentown is clearly a radical Democrat controlled city. Actually, I believe its future will remain that way, especially for a senior citizen like me. I’ve decided to remove that place from my life as best I can. At least, we know who to blame when the decline continues, and it will continue!
DeleteThat bridge is disgraceful. The mayor will wait until he has to replace the bridge then rig the bid to Butz or some other donor. Guy is a joke. I'd like to see a list of what he accomplished beyond what the city workers are supposed to do. All about himself. I guess if I was picked last my whole life and now suddenly people pretended to like me because of my position, I would feel good.
ReplyDeleteThere certainly seems to be a lot of VOTERS that like Matt Tuerk. He just overwhelmingly beat Zucal almost 5 to 1.
ReplyDeleteLet’s cut right to the chase here. To the Allentown demographic today, Mr. Zucal (and me, too) is just another “old white guy.” Our time has passed in Allentown. This city is just another failed Democrat-run urban collection of transient residents who really aren't committed to any place in particular.
DeleteYeaH, and he got 20% of the republican vote without even going for it.
DeleteWhat to do??? Vote for the devil you know, or vote for the devil you don't know? Step from the frying pan into the fire, or not... Voting is all a big crap shoot, and, as we have witnessed, most likely fixed.
DeleteThey tell us our vote is "secret"... then why all the numbers on every piece of voting material???? Secret my butt!!! There isn't one darn thing going on in most towns that hasn't been scripted and ready for deployment. As George Carlin stated... they wouldn't let us vote if it meant anything, and my money says he was correct.
