Mike Welsh Announces For County Executive

Mike Welsh, an extremely qualified local business man, has stepped forward to become our next county executive.
“It’s an honor to step up to represent the County that I have had the privilege of calling home,” said Welsh. “Lehigh County has given me incredible opportunities — it’s where I’ve raised my family, run a small business, and served my community both in and out of office. Now, as our county grapples with new challenges and faces an uncertain future, it’s time for a steady hand and strong leadership.

“I know how to fight on behalf of residents and taxpayers. When I served as one of the few conservatives on the Allentown School Board, I fought against tax increases and wasteful spending while also working with both sides to get things done for students. And as a small business owner, I know the challenges that taxpayers and working families are facing in our county. I’m looking forward to fighting tax increases, supporting our local law enforcement, ending our status as a sanctuary county, and restoring common sense to the Lehigh County government.”
As a political independent and blogger, I appreciate that county residents have a strong alternative to Democrat Josh Siegel, who never met a far left wing agenda that he didn't support.

  1. Thank heavens! We need to get this county back in Republican hands, like it was back in the good old days. I hadn't realized how far it's drifted into the loony lefties' territory. It's nearly as bad as Northampton County.

  2. Imagine Welsh as the County Executive and Ed Zucal as the Allentown mayor? There is potential for long lasting and revolutionary changes for the better.

    1. It is my understanding that Cynthia Mota will not be running in the Dem primary for mayor. While the three way race would have helped Zucal (IMO), he remains energized.

    2. Cinthia has continually failed as a representative of the people that she claims to be. Her reputation is severely damaged in the hispanic community and it is a very wise decision to step aside from the mayoral race. She wouldn't have been elected anyway.

  3. This is great news, I know him personally and he is ideal for the job. Mike would manage the county with integrity and competence. Good luck to him in the primary, we could use more like him in local politics.

    1. While Welsh will be competing against Justin Simmons in the primary, Roger MacLean, although supposedly interested, has yet to announce.

  4. Allentonians do not seem to be desperate enough to change direction. I suspect it needs to get a lot worse before they will be ready.

  5. This is very good news. Mike is exactly the kind of candidate our political system is designed to elect to best direct and manage the vital functions of government. Thank you Mike for throwing your hat in the ring.

  6. Confused. I thought primary was party dependent, he says he is independent

    1. Mike Welsh's words are in italics, mine are not. I'm an independent.

  7. Mike, ten years ago I served alongside Mike Welsh on the Allentown School. As Republicans we were heavily outnumbered by our fellow Democrat directors. To get any of our agenda considered or passed we had to work with them and build concensus. Mike is excellent at reaching across the aisle to explain our point of view and what we hoped to achieve or prevent. He does this with a natural good will and an ability to listen to counter arguments amicably. He can just as easily vote against the majority and explain why with the same positive goodwill. In a time when even our local politics has become poisoned by partisan name calling, vitriol, and innuendo, Mike, if elected will be an overdue and welcomed return to civility.

    1. Agree with Scott Armstrong. As a Democrat Super Voter in Lehigh County, I'm ready to start up a Democrats for Welsh group as he represents the best interests of all county residents way more than Josh Siegel.

  8. There seems no groundswell of either desire or urgency for Allentown to change its direction and support conservative Republicans.

The majority of the population relies on government support and most seem satisfied to be wards of the community. The most flourishing industry in the city seems to be health care and the need for unskilled labor employs a large segment of the community.

The current Democratic city administration advances the ever-growing latino population of the city and through its emphasis on diversity, inclusion and equity, it promotes minority employment and culture, along with LGBTQ visibility.

Why the city would want to change direction politcallly is beyond me.

    1. Brent, Trump and Mckenzie did surprisingly well in Allentown due to Latino support. I work a Trump/Republican booth in center city during the Halloween celebration. There was real excitement and interest shown by the largely Latino crowd.

    2. Brent, there is more to Lehigh Valley than just Allentown. Republicans have done well in South Whitehall and the other suburbs. Currently, the county government is involving itself in social issues well beyond the their province.

    3. The Democrat Party, through Tuerk, and other elected officials across the nation, is self-destructing. I don’t expect the next elections to be the same walk in the park they have been before.

  9. Mota is done in the Hispanic Community. She can blame herself for aligning with Tuerk. People in our circle warned her but she still doesn't get it. Nobody to blame but herself.

    1. What happened to harm her reputation in the Hispanic community? I’m curious.

    2. anon@4:43: I reluctantly host this comment because I don't encourage chats and it is off topic. However, I believe that people underestimate Tuerk's popularity with all segments and demographics. People who comment on blogs and attend city council meetings, are a small portion of the voters. My issue with Mota is her preoccupation with the Dominican Republic and posting in Spanish. I understand ethnic pride, but she is an Allentown, Pa. USA councilperson. Her constituents likewise are here for a better life. She would serve them better encouraging English. Likewise, Tuerk's trips to the Caribbean were wholesale pandering.
