The Trump Card

On Wednesday morning the New York Times proclaimed in headline, The Party Of Trump. Their premise, and the premise of much of the media, is that Republicans are weak minded cultists,  even willing to drink poisoned kool-aid. The antiquated primary system often does nominate lesser qualified candidates in both parties... And it can result in non-competitive elections come November.

While this primary system can throw away what should have been slam dunks, as in Pennsylvania's governor race, don't count out a Republican presidential victory in 2024, unless Trump is the nominee.  While Trump's influence can defeat Cheney in Wyoming, he's way too polarizing to win the presidency again.

While the Times hopes to see Trump run and lose, he won't be at the top of the ticket in 2024, and that's their fear.  With  DeSantis or even Pence, the liberal media will have to work much harder to sway the election.

  1. The continued onslaught against Trump that has been going on for the last 7 years may actually be solidifying support for Trump.
To many, his policies were and still are what is needed.
If the republican believe they can put up another Bush, Cheney or Romney and win they are delusional.

The question is, are there any candidates who will have the proper policies to save this nation and the perseverance to stick to them. I doubt that Pence can, and DeSantis is untested against the onslaught that will be coming.
If the media and the entrenched bureaucracy can be successful at destroying Trump, they will do the same to anyone who challenges their power and privilege.
I hope Trump does run, I hope Americans have to make the choice of Trump or what we have now.
It will be a great test for the country, can they choose policy over their emotions?. If they can't, then they actually deserve to loose what is left of the country.

  2. ray@6:43: I appreciate your comment(s), because you articulate the Trump "wing" so well.

As a conservative I value the two party system as an essential part of our democracy. Here in Allentown the Republican party no longer exists, they haven't won even a council seat in over a decade. So, "deserving to loose" doesn't resonate with me. I agree with Liz Cheney that Trump's claim of a stolen election is too much of a threat to our system. He should have had a better organization in place to monitor the results, or accept them for the country's sake.

  3. The democrats and their leftist allies in the media will demonize whoever is the Republican candidate in 2024. They're very good at smearing people and trying to make elections about those smears instead of actual policies or substance.

They have already started in on DeSantis and will certainly ramp that up should he emerge as the Republican nominee.

Personally, my preference in 2024 is for DeSantis, but I will happily vote for Trump over any democrat.

Democrat policies have caused skyrocketing crime, open borders, failed public schools, increased illegal drugs coming into our country, historically high inflation, shortages of basic necessities including baby formula, etc., etc. etc.

And what democrat, at any level of government has spoken out against those policies? That's right, none of them.

You mention the PA races. Remember when Josh Shapiro spoke out against the Defund the police movement? Remember when tried to remove Philly DA Larry Krasner for not prosecuting criminals and letting them back on the streets? Remember when he - as the PA Attorney General for the last 8 years - did ANYTHING substantial to reduce crime? Yeah, me neither.

Remember when Lt. Governor John Fetterman sided against the teachers' unions to get our public schools open quickly after covid hit, so our public school students wouldn't fall further behind and could get back to school like the private school students did? Remember how HE spoke out against defunding the police and emptying our prisons? Yeah, me neither.

I'm under no illusion that Trump and the republicans are perfect, but they are far above any democrat in terms of the policies that will make a difference in our lives. It's not even close.

In November, I intend to hold the democrats accountable for their record and I have a feeling that I'm not alone.

  4. As a life-long Republican I’m discouraged. With the defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012 Republicans learned they had to up their game and open their minds and become more inclusive. With Trump they did the opposite and brought all the crazies out. Now the Republican Party has lost a generation of potential young leadership to the likes of M. Taylor Green and her buddies. Trump will never stop running because then he wouldn’t have access to your money. I don’t see any Republicans worth voting for locally or nationally.

  5. Mike,

You and I might not like Donald Trump or want him to launch another run for the White House but we both know he will and he will be the Republican nominee.
Why, because the poison that doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Trump has been the target of outrageous slander, libels, phony criminal investigations...all directed at him by an entrenched corrupt partisan element that dominates powerful offices in the Federal Government. Trump has triumphed over all and is still standing. So they keep attacking him, each time they up the ante and each time they manage only to demonstrate their own determination to lawlessly destroy the man who has dared call them out for what they are, deeply corrupt and a threat to the rule of law.
Centuries ago fables and lore were crafted from such epic clashes of titans, the perceived threat to the people was often depicted as a dragon, the defender of the fearful victims of the monster was the hero. The monster today is clearly the rogue element of our federal government. We have witnessed how they ignore the rule of law to achieve their own partisan and personal ends. Anyone and everyone who gets in the way, or draws the attention of the monster will be crushed by its great weight, power, and force. One man came forward and bravely dared to reveal and challenge this monster, as a result he has drawn the monsters wrath. Great stuff for stories.
The next presidential election will be a contest between the evil dragon and the flawed hero. I wish there was no dragon so we wouldn't need a hero. But there is, and we do.

  6. Mike, how come only republicans need to accept things even when corrupt and swallow hard for the good of the country.
Did the democrats swallow hard and accept Trump, did they do anything for the good of the country.

  7. By the way, having been involved deeply in the Republican Party for years I will testify that very few are koolaid drinkers. We spend most of our time arguing amongst ourselves. It's a real challenge to get our group to agree on anything or even a single candidate to support.

  8. Fully agree with Scott Armstrong. Scott is obviously someone who gets his knowledge from places other than the talking heads on radio and TV, and certainly not from the Morning Call!

America will not fend off a total overthrow of government and remaking into a Socialist/Fascist country if Democrats remain in control. Donald Trump is the most likely to stop the destruction we see all around us.

  9. It is interesting that many want to just ignore, the Russian agent or collusion hoax, designed to force Trump from office.
The Biden family corruption impeachment hoax brought against Trump for asking questions about the Biden corruption in Ukraine.
The fake investigation concerning the value of Trump properties brought by the openly partisan N.Y.Ag. The persecution of the Trump financial officer who is charges with felonies for gifts he received
The Georgia suit , again by partisan govt official..
Then lastly, the raid on his home likely looking for records that will implicate officials in illegal act. Does anyone really believe they are looking for nuclear secrets?
Of course, we just font like Trump , he is not a career politician, he has made a living in the private sector and had the nerve to question the Bush/Cheney foreign policy.
To top all that off they hate him because he has refused to kiss a**, the way most of his accusers have spent most of their lives.
It should all just be forgotten for the good of the country.
If it is all forgotten, we do not have a country.

  10. Scott & Ray, You guys seems more inclined to lose with "principle" with Trump, than win with someone else. Trump won in 2016 because of independent conservatives such as myself. He lost in 2020 because he never matured into the job. He would lose by much more in 2024 because of his behavior before and after Jan. 6th. Because of immigration, public safety, trade and other issues, I'm hoping that the Republicans put someone up that I can vote for.

  11. Mike, Did I say I would vote for Trump in the primary? No. What I did say is that he will win the primaries and be our next nominee. I explained why with my metaphor. Trump has become the hero of those who see the corruption of the federal government by rich and powerful forces as he has taken them on, engaged them, taken the punches and is still standing. I can think of a long list of R's I would rather see as our nominee, it's just not in the cards that any of them have a chance. We can thank the Justice Department, the FBI, and the mainstream corporate media for that. After what I have seen these past few years I will support Trump over any Democrat in 2024.

  12. I wonder how many folks REALIZE that the most of the incriminating facts revealed about the ex-President came from members of his own party! Doesn’t that say something?
