I was saddened to hear about shots being fired near the basketball courts in Cedar Beach Park.
I'm afraid the city is at the point now that when a crowd is drawn to Cedar Beach and other parks, we need additional police coverage on site.
The Morning Call reports Pastor/activist Gregory Edwards as saying...
“So, when we talk about public safety, ... poverty is an act of violence. When folks are living in abject poverty, poverty is an act of violence, and so certain types of crimes happen in certain environments. I’m not abdicating personal responsibility, but certain types of crime happen in certain environments because of the lack of resources that could alter someone’s decision."
In all respect to Pastor Edwards, Allentown always had poor people and Allentown always had parks, but we never had shootings in the parks. Credit to Mayor Tuerk, who seems to understand that poverty is one issue and public safety is another.
While the activists will always want more resources for their poverty programs, the police need more manpower, if our city and parks are to become safe again.
The is a word for people like Pastor Edwards.
ReplyDeleteThat word is "demagogue".
scott@7:25, although Edwards' grandchildren were in the park, along with hundreds of other children, he was NOT there. Nevertheless, the Morning Call quotes him at both the beginning and end of their article on the incident. They also quote Enid Santiago, a failed candidate for state representative. Fortunately, the shooter was later arrested. What was his bail? The paper should inform us on the status of our safety, and stop promoting their rooster of activists.
ReplyDeleteThe Morning Call routinely goes to the usual demagogues for insights/their take on the situation at hand. Why do they do this instead of seeking other voices for balance? Because they don't want to.
ReplyDeleteThe left has been telling us for decades that people act poorly because they are poor. The real truth is that people are poor because they act poorly.
ReplyDeletePoverty has nothing to do with shootings.. period!
ReplyDeleteMost of these so called experts are "paid". They profit from the Allentown's misfortunes. Most which weren't born in Allentown having little idea of Allentown's history. I remember the huge poor minority populations once living under the 8th street bridge, along Lawrence street continuing beyond Lehigh street hill and going down Hamilton street hill where city hall now stands down to the train stations and along Front street. If there was one shooting a year it made front page news.
No this isn't about minorities who once populated the area. What it is about is the transient population who now infest our area from New York who have no investment in Allentown's future. Things go sideways they simply blow out of town. This wasn't true when many rented back in the 50's. I have no idea why that changed.
Why is many feel they don't have a stake in Allentown's future? How can we change that attitude? I'll leave it to others to decide how that should come about.
LVCI@3:37, The irony of the Morning Call promoting these "paid" experts, who "profit" from the decline, is that none of the paper's subscribers buy into those woke myths.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct mike about the many Non Governmental Organizations/NGO's in the city/valley, which are often paid for with tax dollars that seem to profit from misery but never end or remediate it. These are the people the Call goes to. That's why few subscribe, and those who do rarely read it.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to note that in Mr. Molovinski's blog he states "...in all respect to Pastor Edwards...." but in the comments on his blog he refers to Ms. Enid Santiago "...as a failed candidate for State Representative." True Ms. Santiago ran for State Representative, made it to the primaries and lost by a few votes to the incumbent. She was the first to prove and have a conviction for voter fraud in Allentown and had those responsible done their job more thoroughly may have actually proven that there was far wider voter fraud than what was uncovered. It is also interesting to note that while Mr. Molovinsky refers to Ms. Santiago as a "failed candidate" he does not refer to Pastor Edwards as such even though he didn't even make it to the primaries when he ran for election for State Congress. Where is the "respect" for Ms. Santiago that was shown for Pastor Edwards?
