Covid-19 In Urban Lehigh Valley
Recently a gentleman was arrested for firing his gun in the air near 9th & Allen Streets. What got my attention about the incident wasn't the gun, but that it occurred at what was described as a crowded street celebration. What is it about Covid-19 that those celebrators don't understand? It's not that they got tired of obeying the social distancing protocol and rebelled, they never started.
While some minority leaders complain of being of disproportionately infected with the virus, they ignore the lack of safety practiced in their community.
The devastation at the nursing homes is a combination of low paid workers from cultures too casual about safety procedures, and the barring of family member visits. While the visitor ban was well intended, it deprived the patients of much essential care, and more importantly, ongoing monitoring of a deteriorating situation.

Your treading on dangerous ground, political correctness trumps facts and science.
ReplyDeletePeople raised in dysfunctional homes and communities become dysfunctional adults and generally live in dysfunctional neighborhoods. It has nothing to do with race but lousy public schools and altruistic welfare programs that destroy people rather than provide a path towards a successful and meaningful life. It's all very sad. All this said, everyone knows this but to point out public assistance programs succeed in only making recipients wards of the state is now viewed as racist. Not because it is, but to attempt to silence those who want real reform. In the meantime, another generation is lost and the next lost generation is on the way.

ReplyDeleteFirst, where was the Allentown Police Department when the "crowded street celebration" was going on? I can see this being missed in areas outside of center city, but I find it hard to believe that not one patrol car downtown saw it at 9th and Allen. So I can only conclude that they've been ordered to ignore such gatherings, instead of dispersing them. Had they dispersed this gathering, they might have prevented both the spread of the virus, and a shooting.
Secondly, where is the Allentown Health Bureau? We're constantly being told by the Morning Call how vital they are in stopping the spread of the virus by getting the word out to the community, particularly minority communities. Yet here's a neighborhood less than a mile from City Hall that apparently hasn't gotten the word yet, and Allentown has the highest case rates in the Valley. That's not exactly a scorecard of success, yet our liberal politicians and their allies in the press will continue to say that we need a county-level bureau to duplicate the Allentown Bureau's failure.
By the way, speaking of dysfunctional, has anyone heard or seen our mayor during this pandemic? The pandemic that is impacting Allentown very hard. Do we even have a government in this town anymore? I see the police and hear firetrucks so that's a positive sign.
ReplyDeleteunknown, Trust me, the cops have bigger fish to fry.
ReplyDeleteray@8:04, I understand that there are those who will misinterpret my post, but I don't maintain a blog to shy away from issues. I do appreciate that low paid workers often work in service that others wouldn't choose to do. That they often are dependent on public transportation and other riskier modes. That they often also live in more crowded homes. While all these factors increase their exposure to the virus, there is also a factor of ignoring the safety guidelines in the community.

ReplyDeleteI believe our Mayor did his part by issuing a proclamation to ring church bells a week ago.
I guess we'll see all the other great things he's been doing when he puts out his campaign mailer for re-election next year.
I guess I missed that inspiring event as church bells are fairly routine.
