A Wild Card For Lehigh Valley

Susan Wild joined 13 other Democratic congressional members in voting against the new $3 Trillion aid package.  Conventional analysis is that these house members are in somewhat conservative districts, and their support of such unbridled spending would hurt them come November. In the recent coverage of Trump's visit to the local mask company,  one couldn't help but notice all the Trump supporters.  Charlie Dent's longevity, in both Harrisburg and Washington,  had been strategically attributed to his reputation as a centrist.

As a registered independent, politically I'm naive about such maneuvers.  However, as a registered pessimist and blogger, I take very little at face value.

Face value in the Lehigh Valley means very little. Outside journalists look at all the construction downtown, and think that the area is prospering. Little do they realize that all the new buildings belong to one man, and that the new commercial tenants are simply poached from surrounding suburban office parks. Peter is being robbed to pay Paul, at taxpayer expense.

I've previously complimented Wild on her accessibility.  I could have phoned her for comment on this post, but the Morning Call published her reasons last week.  As an independent blogger,  I think that it was a call better not made.  Between now and November, I may well have a question more important to both me and the district.

  1. Susan Wild has become Charlie Dent! Just like that! Well, as someone who has knocked on a lot of doors, it's my opinion that becoming Charlie Dent would be a very bad move for someone of either party. The political middle as ceased to exist and there is little support on either side for "establishment" go along, get along, keep the fat checks rolling, politicians.
This said, even if Susan was trying to move to the middle, good luck with that. Either Dean or Lisa will have a library of evidence to paint her as exactly what she is, a highly partisan, far left, polarizing Democrat. Susan can pretend to be Charlie as she has no primary opponent, as soon as that's done her appeals will be directed solely at the Democrats energized, radicalized, and angry base. This is the road to any Democrat's victory because frankly that's what their base demands.

  2. Had the measure failed, I would give Wild credit for her vote. However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi allowed certain democrats in competitive districts to vote against the measure, knowing that the bill would still pass.

I'm not fooled, and I hope others aren't either. If her vote had been needed by Pelosi, Wild would have fallen in line and cast her vote accordingly.

  3. Regarding your thoughts on poaching, you would think that with the NY and NJ tax burdens, a tax-advantaged district in Allentown would have been overwhelmed by businesses fleeing those states.

The fact that this never happened, along with the PA Governor never clamoring to end the in-state poaching, speaks volumes about the true state of Allentown.

The city's problems are in City Hall, with an obsession on raising revenue and continuing to spend as it wants. For every tax hike the city has implemented (EIT, raised three times and HIGHER FOR RESIDENTS than non-residents; property tax, raised 27%; a new storm water tax whether or not your water stays on your property; EMS/LST tax hike; etc.), City Hall still doesn't get it.

We're simply not competitive with our neighbors. Those with means can drive ten minutes from City Hall and give themselves a raise by being taxed a lesser amount. Not to mention that they're also in safer neighborhoods with better schools.

And with each tax hike, City Hall wonders where everyone's gone, and why they're short on revenue again.

Or maybe they just don't care, since the high taxes allow the lucrative contracts with campaign donors to continue, and a portion of those contracts (our tax dollars) gets kicked back to keep those same politicians in office.

  5. Just like the two state reps boy toy 1 and 2 she will act as if she is representing the local people. She would not even get out of her car and walk the streets.
