Issues With The NRA

I'm a supporter of the 2nd Amendment. Although that is a right which I defend, as an engaged citizen I appreciate living in a society of laws. There are rights and laws, and we can all live within them. I do not blindly consider every regulation as a curtailment of my rights, or as a slippery slope which will erode them, as does the NRA.  I can exercise my rights in a responsible manner, without purposefully provoking those who feel differently about this issue.

Each November the NRA sends its current and former members a card telling them whom they should vote for in their district, to protect their 2nd Amendment rights. Although their member magazine often features hunting rifles, the organization must also think of their members as sheep, who should only care about one issue. As Americans we should guard our right to own firearms,  but never tolerate being told how to vote.

I support Americans For Responsible Solutions, the group started by Mark Kelly and  Gabby Giffords.  They both value their right to own a fireman,  but appreciate the need for greater controls against irresponsible ownership.

  1. This is a timely reprint.

With the entire Democrat 2020 Presidential field calling for everything from immediate executive orders banning guns to a full repeal of the Second Amendment, and willing to use every shooting to further their political agenda, I am very thankful that the NRA is there to protect my Second Amendment rights.

The slippery slope they've mentioned in the past wasn't just a figment of their imagination.

  2. Criminals, by definition, do not follow laws. So I'm not sure what the Democrat Party thinks it will accomplish by advocating for this legislation or that legislation.

I, for one, am also sick and tired of the Democrats calling the President a 'white nationalist' --- what would have happened if anybody had called Saint Barack Hussein 0bama, the rock star son of a failed Kenyan Marxist revolutionary, a 'black nationalist'?

  3. I am licensed to carry a firearm and thankful that the NRA is protecting my Second Amendment right to do so. I do not understand the logic of the Democratic Party's call to ban firearms, as if this will solve the mass shooting problems. Prohibition didn't work any better than our current laws against use of illegal drugs, and prostitution, although also illegal in almost all states, is alive and well. Banning firearms or extreme gun control measures will only restrict the access of firearms to law-abiding citizens. What we need is greater access to mental health professionals and more mental hospitals so that those individuals who pose a risk to themselves and others can be institutionalized and receive necessary care.

  4. Your 2nd amendment allows you to have your guns & rifles for hunting but why do you all need automatic killing guns, 86 yrs old & this is what you all are about killing innocent people with the ability to buy these guns, Nra rules this country them & the cronies who take their money, tear me up I could not give a damn we do not need war weapons for our selfish pleasure, the guns have a trigger so that people can pull & kill at the same time, disgusting to say the least.

I've served in the military and these are not "war weapons". Nor are they "automatic".

Owning a rifle does not make me and MILLIONS of others a murderer. I hold those who actually commit the crimes in great contempt, and hope for the swiftest and most severe punishment allowed by our legal system.

Guns are no more the problem than planes were on 9/11. It was the individuals who used them unlawfully that are the culprit.

While I understand and share your sorrow over what happened this weekend, the solutions you seem to support are not the answer.

  6. From ZeroHedge:

An exhaustive new study from the CDC reveals that the leading cause of gun violence in America is your political opponents. Researchers looked at a number of potential causes of gun violence such as mental health, family situation, cultural shifts, gun laws, rap music, videogames, sugar consumption, and the actual gunman, but by and large, the most prominent cause of gun violence was what most already suspected. The fault lies with those who you disagree with politically.

  7. None of the laws proposed would have stopped the recent shootings, guns were purchased legally and passed a background check, the goal of the anti-second amendment crowd is registration, background checks on all purchases even transfers among family would in effect be registration, this will make possible the executive order by some future president or governor to confiscate guns in some possible crisis. All further gun control legislation is indeed the slippery slope. Our problems are a moral vacuum which cannot be remedied by legislation.

  8. With all due respect, its the weapons of war you do not deserve to own. All these comments talk about guns. You can have your guns. No hand grenades, bazookas, flame throwers, auto matic assault rifles, missle launchers etc, etc, etc The feds are the largest buyer of the weapons of war. They could stop this crap in a minute by not buying any weapons from those companies that would sell same weapons of war to civilians. Oh and the 2nd amendment does give you the right to own tanks. You guys are just gonna have to help craft a sensible solution or your gonna lose the entire argument.

I think you're making the point of those of us who are against irrational laws against AR-15's and other so-called "assault rifles". These rifles are not automatic, and are even carried by local police forces.

They are not "weapons of war", many of which you included in your list, and banning them won't solve anything. In addition, we had a ban previously, and that didn't work. So we've been down that road before.

I think we all want a solution, but it should be one that actually solves the problem at hand.

  11. The reason for the ban on these automatic guns and magazines and bump stocks is their ability to mass kill. Since 2000 its been known that over 60 % of the mass shooters had a suicide component. Most suicides are impulsive and almost impossible to prevent. It only takes one shot to kill yourself. Its the mass shootings that have to be reduced. It doesnt take a nutcase to commit suicide or kill. Sad as it was we had a local political mover and shaker not too long ago who killed his wife then killed himself. Sad very sad but we have to keep these high powered automatic weapons and super bullets out of the hands of civilians.

  12. the "assault rifles" such as the AR-15, are a civilian version of an automatic military weapon, but it is NOT automatic...It only fires one bullet at a time, like 300 other rifles on the market. although its appearance may attract people of a certain mentality, they will simply use another weapon when they go "nuts".
