Flights Of Fancy
Readers of this blog can learn from my search engine, (right sidebar of web version) that I'm a long time critic of projects at the Lehigh Valley International Airport. The fact that there are few flights that hardly go anywhere, never stops them from expanding the underused facility. In my previous criticism, I took them to task for planning a separate transportation hub, when convenience of the existing one was one of their few advantages. When the airport's largest incoming flight arrived yesterday, no taxicabs were on hand. The airport will have a new transportation hub, with no transportation. Now they want to build a hotel?
What people want are flights and destinations. What this airport needs is a new executive director, and a new board of directors.

I disagree.
ReplyDeleteThe current board and Executive Director have righted an operation that was in a dire financial situation due to decisions made decades ago.
At the main airport, passenger travel is up; destinations have increased; air cargo operations have been expanded; and new hangar space is being built to attract and accomodate more private jets.
Unlike when Mayor Pawlowski served on the board, there is a commitment to keeping Queen City (in Allentown) and Braden Airpark (Forks Twp.) open, and upgrades are being made at both of those airports as well.
Given the evidence, I think it's very evident that all three airports are heading in the right direction.
I tend to agree with "Unknown 6:55. The main problem with insufficient flights at LVIA is that the FAA won't use it's enormous power to divert some flights now using Philly and Newark. Draw a 50-mile circle around the Valley and you have a huge population that would prefer to use LVIA rather than the big-city airports. Also, it's hard to belive virtually all local flights go south and west only.
