Double Down(Towns)
People often speculate as to why Bethlehem now is a destination, while, too often, Allentown is considered a place to avoid. The long answer will not fit within this short post, but here may be a few reasons. Bethlehem had two downtowns, on both sides of the river. While downtown Allentown certainly was the premier shopping area for the Lehigh Valley prior to the malls, it may have become a victim to over-planning. In the late 60's, early 70's, Allentown attempted to compete with the suburban malls by building a canopy on Hamilton Street. The viability of Hamilton Street was extended for a few years, but the magnetism of Hess's could well have been the reason. Bethlehem also built a pedestrian mall on Broad Street, but the historical quaintness of Main Street remained. Although the commerce in its southside business district languished, the architecture remained. By the time Allentown removed the canopies in the late 90's, the architecture of its buildings had long been bisected and altered. As historical became chic, Bethlehem profited from having done less in the past.
Its southside business district is a time capsule, architecturally unchanged since the turn of the last century. It now is becoming a mix of boutiques and bistros in a fashionable historic setting. Last, but not least, Bethlehem benefited from consistency of developmental leadership. While Allentown has had a succession of Economic Directors, Tony Hanna, with benefit of his institutional memory, has led Bethlehem for many years.

ADDENDUM DECEMBER 28, 2018: Allentown lost most its historical mercantile district with the arena, and new NIZ office towers. They are without architectural merit.

While the downtown is now an architectural loss the surrounding neighborhoods contain many architectural gems. Sadly the existing blight in these same areas has been allowed to proliferate due to incompetent and corrupt city leadership. This is allentoAlle real problem.
ReplyDeleteBethlehem is also defying the national trend of increasing mall vacancies, due to the changing dynamics of retail......the movement away from brick & mortar structures to digital purchasing and home delivery services rather than in-store customer pickups.
ReplyDeleteA generation of younger parents with children have grown up comfortable with computer viewing & ordering, especially since apps now can calculate and present instant price comparisons for easy viewing. Payment via your phone eliminates the need to carry a purse around and enduring the hassle of poor service or checkout lines and fishing to find your credit cards or checkbook.
Sidewalk cafes are fun to sit and drink and eat in, but, they can't replace dozens of store fronts that no longer exist. You would think that with a larger population nearby, city planners could have come up with some viable solutions to revive downtown Allentown as a shopping magnet. Apparently, one sports arena is not sufficient?
MM, now if they downtown development crew could land Walmart and more dollar stores, downtown would become a viable shopping destination again. Rethink the dynamics created as this the very meens of this plunderious changing event!
ReplyDeleteFirst we have a developer that is brother too the local legal rulers, proyor too being involved in administration of hospital wars locally!
That said the local criminal conflux make the Russian hacks look like stealing lollipops from a babby in comparison.
@5:44, the downtown development may be devoid of meritorious architecture, but to my knowledge there is nothing illegal occurring.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that while there may be some architectural 'gems' in the downtown neighborhoods, they will soon lose that designation. I drive up 8th Street shows a deteriorating physical nature of the homes. Rotting bay windows are all over the place. Other structural deficiencies, including siding, facades and porches seem to be beyond repair. Shame.
ReplyDeleteI think you nailed it.
ReplyDeleteMM, were did you acquirer them there historical inhowse blinders you seem too wear so proudly? This was my first chance too have redd your reply and seeing your historical age you should remember mall sprawl to Whitehall million dollar mile of 145 and the true mayor for life's involvement!
ReplyDeleteI could go on about the historically criminal land dealings that has seemed to play it's role in life today but that's many different articles and we my have to consult the historic wealands arena agendas designs and its fluff and puff of its pink pussy hat pieces published as articles in the locals inhowse blinders too?
