Allentown's Remarkable Failure

I find the revitalization of Allentown incredibly unexciting... It's rather unbelievable that there could be a $billion dollars of new construction, but not 10 cents worth of new vibe.

Despite Morning Call article after article, about both new office workers and more apartments, nothing has changed. Walking or driving down Hamilton Street during the week shows little sign of life. On the weekends, there is no sign of life.

By any measure other than J.B. Reilly's real estate portfolio, it is an incredible taxpayer funded failure. The only enthusiasm is from those with a vested interest.

  1. It's just not that appealing. Unexciting bland buildings blocking out light. Needing to park in a garage. And needing to walk a distance in harms way.
Where are all those yuppie millenial people that now live downtown? I see lots of people that don't look like yuppie millenials. Some look more like homeless.
I don't think Wegmans or Whole Foods is building a new store downtown anytime soon.
Billy Joel's Atown song getting closer to right.

  2. ...and all the glowing MC publicity for Jb's charitable giving, when in fact it is the proceeds of generous tax breaks.

  3. josh@10:41, reilly's city center reality has certainly benefitted from the hospital. In addition to having the hospital fitness and other facilities in the private portion (reilly's) of the arena building, the hospital also has ghost offices there, so that the state income taxes from their highest paid employees go to reilly's debt service. although i broke this story years ago, the morning call has chosen to never report on it

that said, although the amount donated to the children's hospital has not been disclosed, I'm sure it is substantial. his generosity should be acknowledged.

  4. Overpriced restaurants, dicey security downtown and not 1 good Irish pub, like you see in NYC. Meat & potatoes at a reasonable cost, a good beer and atmosphere NOT TO BE found downtown.

  5. MC = propaganda of silence. This is typical of all the liberal media. Don't like the facts - just ignore them. Don't report on them or follow up.

  6. C'mon, let's all be honest for half a second here. Exactly how hard it is to be generous with what amounts to other people's (i.e., the taxpayers') money? Meanwhile, were it not for the "one of a kind" Neighborhood Improvement Zone legislation, the very same stuff about which legendary The Morning Call propagandist Bill White once wrote that he wouldn't be too thrilled about if he, himself, were living in "say, Altoona", would J.B. Reilly STILL have donated the EXACT SAME AMOUNT of money or would his generosity been something considerably less to acknowledge?

Either way, Foward To Victory, Comrades!

And a very Happy Health Care to one and all!!!

    Respectfully,

    ROLF OELER
