A Wild Ride

No offense to Susan Wild,  but she wasn't exactly a local household political name.  Prior to becoming solicitor in Pawlowski's administration,  most locals virtually didn't know her,  except she did run once unsuccessfully for county commissioner.

In this last quarter alone, she has garnered $1.3 million dollars in contributions in her run for congresswoman.  Almost all that money is from out of state.  They are not contributing because of their faith in Wild, but in their desire to flip the House of Representatives.  Furthermore,  most of those contributions are actually a negative reaction to Donald Trump.

As a local political junkie, I am somewhat offended that our congressperson might be chosen essentially by outside money.

  1. Notice today's MC headlined the amount as if that's a great achievement. If that was a Republican's haul you can bet there would have been a subhead about it coming from outside the district.
Sometimes what is NOT said can make a story fake news, too.

  2. Welp, I’m no Wild fan but I’d be hard pressed through fun nd a law that says an American can’t donate to another American running for office. I’m sure your offense is sincere.

Gosh, leaving campaign finance aside we have representatives from one presidential candidate who admitted meeting with Russian intelligence agents. Same agency that has attempted to break into state election systems. Any outrage left over?

  3. It is a fact that from the time she became a lawyer (I believe in the 90s) Susan Wild has been actively involved in many social and cultural organizations in the Lehigh Valley. I think that's what she's referring to.

For the past six years my major issue has been campaign finance reform. For many of those years I refused to vote for a candidate who took a lot of campaign money in, especially Pac money. However, I discovered that the ones who limited their war chest generally lost to those who took big money, and if they did win they did little or nothing to implement campaign finance reform. So, no, I don't like big money in politics but I absolutely believe Susan Wild when she says campaign finance reform is her first priority. In spite of the fact that she's taking big money in.

  5. Campaign finance reform is just an election slogan. The Supreme Court (past strong 5 anti-reform majority and now waaay strong reichwing majority) has made it perfectly clear that they believe money is protected "speech" and corporate entities are protected "people." Hence, any legislation passed to curb campaign financing would be struck down as unconstitutional. To be fair, if liberal/progressive groups were able to muster the same amount of corporate & Koch/Adelson money it would be permissible under the GOP Supreme Court as well. Of course, that is not the reality, and there will be no change unless & until a 5-4 liberal majority ever ocurrs.

This may be the stupidest statement ever made.

So "Do as I say, not as I do?"

Wild may in fact pursue something she'll try to call "campaign finance reform". But rest assured it will be designed to give her and her party the advantage, not to actually fix the system.

I don't think MM made any claim that accepting such contributions is illegal. The point is that the vast majority of her support is coming from outside the district.

If elected, it is far more likely that she'll represent her out-of-state donor base than the people of the 7th District. New York and San Francisco is buying her vote.

  8. You all make me laugh, So lets go back to getting their campaign money from locals including those looking for favors. Whose gonna sift through that nonsense. Even if its the lesser of two evils outside money is by far the best choice. Its all about the raw vote so suggest we all go out and make the choice. Please tell me why so many Republican congressman are giving up or just plain leaving their positions.Seems to me that Dent left not because he was worried about a Dem challenge but because of the nasty element in his own party. Did the nasty element find a candidate better then Dent? Doubt it but ya never know. The days of respected statesmen are gone and our system and politics have become a disgrace. Now back to my life of leisure

  9. Susan Wild is just another corrupt lawyer who will say anything to get elected. She is not being funded by folks from the LV, rather dark money donated by New York and San Francisco billionaires. Anyone associated with FED ED can't be trusted to serve the LV's interests.
