Allentown's Snow Removing Failure
Yesterday, I decided to revisit the street shown in the previous post. Although the street once again had snow dugouts, the 600 block of 16th Street now always has too many double parkers to allow safe stopping. The picture shown above, taken yesterday, is the 300 block, between Chew and Gordon Streets. While I was waiting for the drugstore to develop the film, the street sweeper truck sped down the middle of 16th street. Although sweeping tickets are issued by the Allentown Parking Authority, the sweeping trucks are operated by Allentown's Department of Streets. I did not observe any sweeping tickets being issued. Rather than going through the motion of sweeping, I would have rather seen Allentown continue the curb to curb snow removal job, which seems to have been suspended. The parking on many streets and blocks still remain clogged with the snow from the storm weeks ago. Although we have dodged yet another snow storm, the temperatures are forecast to remain very cold. One can only feel sorry for the poor snooks who work for National Penn Bank. They are being forced to move from quaint Boyertown, to the filth of center city Allentown.

Last week, WFMZ showed that city workers were clearing snow around downtown trash cans on Hamilton. I wonder why the same consideration isn't being made for our fire hydrants.
ReplyDeleteMike,
ReplyDeleteParking is still severely limited in the downtown because of the snow and ice in the streets. Yet the Parking Authority makes park-able areas no parking so they can go through the pointless exercise of sweeping the streets.
This sort of nonsense is why those who can leave, do.

I think the snow on the block were I live hasn't been removed since 1969 when my family perchased it? The world famous yocco hotdog vendor cannot even have trucks deliver goods to there original site without insurance claims being made?

patent pending
I saw city crews on Walnut St. near 14th this morning clearing snow curb to curb.
ReplyDeleteI know all of this is very serious. But Hey Folks, "Lighten Up" a little bit. I haven't laughed this hard all winter reading the "postings" and comments of the past two days, even with my Rheumatoid Arthritis crippling me to tears in all this cold.
ReplyDeleteThank You Michael, Keep up the good work!!.......PJF
Just to Cheer you up. The birds are singing more, and the sun is back at times with wonderful warmth. Cardinals are extremely active with song several times a day now. And our wisteria pods are popping earlier this year.
ReplyDeleteSpring is just around the block...PJF
why are city workers clearing snow on Hamilton ST? between bt 12th and 4th is the rescue missions job after all they receive approx 125,000 per yr from the downtown maintenance contract to do that!and why are they cleaning windows in city hall? when Allentown becomes non-profit can we all receive donations and stillhold jobs and government contracts?
ReplyDeleteOf course it is easy to say lighten up, but for the many seniors who live downtown removing parking opportunities that are close to home imposes a real difficulty. The snow and ice make any walk outside hazardous.

Ref. 6:41pm You are absolutely right Scott. I am one of those seniors, all crippled up now "to boot", Paying, what seems at times wasted taxes.
ReplyDeleteBut we are looking to you "young lions" to keep up the good fight for those of us 75 years "young" and older. And for that we Thank You....PJF
