The Morning Call Peeps

Encouraged by the local page editor, Mike Miorelli, The Morning Call reporters continue to lift articles from the blogosphere, and not credit the blogger. The paper's website is featuring the video of the Dieruff High taser incident, as originally reported by Bernie O'Hare on Ramblings. Manny Gomiz says that the paper obtained the video. Actually, they got the story and video from O'Hare, who had obtained it through proper police surveillance channels. Bernie is not upset about the use of his intellectual property, but I'm offended. When material was lifted from my blog last year without proper attribution, Bill White defended the paper's practice. Last fall I inadvertently received an inter-office Morning Call email which described me as "disdainful", I suppose this post will not alter that perception.
UPDATE: NBC Philadelphia has picked up the story. Although they (erroneously) cite The Morning Call with the story, they credit the video to Lehigh Valley Ramblings (Bernie O'Hare)

  1. Did see this story break on Bernies web site. I had not known that they got the video from him. He should get the credit for breaking the story and for the public service he has provided for doing so.

  2. since i write in a condensed style, and my posts are only one paragraph, it's easier for them to lift my news breaks;i.e., logging south mountain and the school district hiring joyce marin. in bernie's case, with his longer articles and higher viewer-ship, one would think they would be embarrassed not to credit him. ( they have credited him in the past, but not this time)

  3. Bernie should have received credit.
The Call is no longer a newspaper, more glossy advertisers insert. Please try to find out more about the Call's benefitting from the city's new NIZ zone.

  4. i do not subscribe to the theory that the Call is holding back about the arena because their building is in the NIZ. their inclusion in that district is logical on the map. actually, the only apparent "spot" zoning is the sacred heart hospital. they do so much good in center city, i do not begrudge them any such consideration. i believe that their (Morning Call) complacently is based on the corporate situation. the tribune is in bankruptcy; their jobs and future are contingent upon almost everything else but their writing and investigation; not much incentive. in my particular case, it appears that miorelli has a long standing aversion. the paper would not cover when i unearthed the boat landing, which was buried for over 50 years. that appears to be a case of putting his prejudice above the news.

  6. Sacred Heart should be given every consideration. Imagine the heating bill alone! A friend lives in a very small 2 bedroom house and just got oil delivered. More than $1,000 dollars!

  7. Mike, at this time the morning call has not benefitted being in the .I.Z. but it could at some futurw date do you not agree. They could be waiting for new authority mayor is forming to take over from A.C.I d.A. to get the benefits by selling the property and then the employees wage taxes would go to pay the mortgage of the new owner of the morning call property. could this not happen.

  8. anon 8:01, as i said before, as the map is drawn, they would have to be especially excluded not to be in it. (as was the PPL tower, because the state declined to give up that much taxation) the sale of convenience you describe would have to be approved by the new authority to allow NIZ tax benefits. the sale would not result in any more jobs or benefit. it's too much speculation for me. the Morning Call no longer produces editorials expressing their opinion. the editorials are submitted by private citizens. although i have criticized the reporters for not exploring the downsides more (such as 650 apartments) i do not believe that they have a "horse in the race" about the NIZ. i have now hosted your theory twice, hope that satisfies you.

  9. Just so people know my attitude on this topic, and it differs from blogger to blogger, I don't care whether I get credit for a story that I may have reported on initially. I think it is more important to get the word out than to get credit for it, and my reward is to see my story in the newspaper. I often share info with reporters, and my reward is to see the story.

  10. My brother told me a long, long time ago that, a writer just isn't any good at all until he has been ripped off.

  11. It was not so long ago that Sacred Heart Hospital used eminent domain to expand their operations.
They used the same tactics to procure their desired properties.
    OUR houses are OUR retirement.
Many tax paying citizens got burned during that acquisition.
We are not speaking of schools or roads. These are peoples lives being destroyed for the benefit of other, apparently more important, individuals.

  12. anon 10:32, i do recall a protracted negotiation with a lawyer's office on 5th st. for their then new medical clinic, and perhaps some blight designation by the city, but not the actual use of eminent domain.
