We're slow learners here in Lehigh Valley. When you read what they call a paper, the local news needs no date. We decided to make our airport even less competitive, by charging more for parking and flights. They need the money to pay for the land they never needed or used. They are once again remodeling the airport to make it nicer for people who don't use it. Over in Easton, Sal Panto marches ahead with his Al Bundy Museum of High School Sports. He also is still pushing his brew pub idea. If he combines them, we'll have the real Bundy experience. On the other side of the Valley, Allentown picked it's official bird as part of becoming a Bird City. There was a time when Allentown was full of robins; Now we have robbers. Just remember, we're just one project and speech away from turning everything around. Time to increase parking meter fees in Allentown.

Excellent post. In a few paragraphs you have summed it all up well.
ReplyDeleteRaising of the debt ceiling may invoke a major fiscal crisis that could slap some real humility into the downtown clowns of Allentown.
Could see a day where the only arguements from them are who gets what corner to set up their apple stall or hot dog cart.
"I have to tell you that all of our birds here are not angry," "We have very nice birds."

clowns in the downtown---great idea. and they will be selling apples and hot dogs?
ReplyDeleteLee Eichelberger (Lobar) and Alvin Butz have made a strong contribution to the valley with airport and other construction. Yes the taxpayers financed them but without their leadership and political savvy where would we be. We should be appreciative of their efforts. They pay high taxes and support employment. Don't bash airport and arena construction.

ReplyDeleteButz has made a living off of overpriced government projects paid by the taxpayers. His Allentown HQ was built in a KOZ where he paid nothingin taxes.

ReplyDeleteDid I see you at the Kook Aid stand on 11th St. this morning, when I was out walking my pit bull?
How big was your referral check dude?
Yes they spend money, when it is convenient for them.
If they were not there, someone else would fill the void and might contribute more and do a better job. Imagine that!
All you eminent domain minions sound like a bunch of school yard kids trying to impress the teacher.

I wonder, if Wisdom and not Money was the qualification for leadership in the Lehigh Valley, if we would have the "leaders" we do?
ReplyDeleteButz and Lobar made more than a living off government projects. They made jobs. I know three guys that work on Butz's helicopter that would not have these great jobs without his brains and strong leadership. I don't know if Eichelburger has his own helicopter, but if he does, he deserves it. You don't find many men who can afford their own copters. Don't condemn those who create jobs.
ReplyDeleteYup! - Helicopter = Success. We get it.
ReplyDeleteAll I know is I'm gonna get to knock over some buildings downtown, so lighten up.

Mike,
ReplyDeleteWhats our city bird a pigeon?
Another gas leak goes unreported last night in center city.
ReplyDeleteThis time at Gordon and Law St.....
the state bird of Pennsylvania is the ruffed grouse. I am not sure about the official city bird of Allentown but I think it is the yellow-bellied variety of the the sapsucker form the genus Sphyrapicus within the woodpecker family Picidae.
ReplyDeleteBen Franklin wanted the state bird to be a turkey. He was outvoted by the PA Assembly.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Allentown bird was a Turkey buzzard, a scavenger of the dead flesh eating variety with a crooked beak! Probably electable in some districts! Just humor there folks!
