Defend The Parks

Only you can defend our park. Please join me and your neighbors this Wednesday evening to convince City Council that these plans are not compatible with the historic traditions of the Allentown Park System. Contrary to Administration myth, the greater public has been virtually unaware of these plans until very recently. Because of forwarding Trexler Trust Capital Maintenance Funds from one year to the next, City Council has never voted on these specific plans. We do not need a "Destination Playground". We do not want weddings in the Rose Garden, or an expansion of the picnic pavilions. We may speak only at the "Courtesy of the Floor", which starts precisely at 7:30 pm, this Wednesday, July 15th. The bulldozers are literally on the way; this is the first and last chance to preserve our local values.

    Please add S. 12 Street/Dorneypark
Road open weed invested lot that if owned by anyone else would be penalized, but mayor's campaign-contributing buddy gets a pass. Folks drive by this eye-sore. Take a look for yourselves. Two years now! How would you like to be a nearby homeowner?

  2. Actually, right now on national radio is a PSA about "Only You Can Protect Our Parks." How timely is your post.

  3. Call:"Isley's death is the city's ninth homicide this year, five of which remain unsolved."

  4. i believe anon 7:38 meant S.12/downyflake, near mack blvd and emmaus ave.

  5. Why do I tend to think the "Courtesy of the Floor" will, as part of an overall coordinated dog and pony show, be brief?

Don't know how you do what you do Molovinsky and manage to not get arrested.

I know Mal Gross from growing up in the neighborhood. He used to come out and play basketball a little when we were kids. I played a lot of ball with Jack, who would now be known as John F. in the papers as a lawyer like his dad.

Mal used to take me to Civil War roundtable meetings when I was little and he certainly encouraged neighborhood kids to not spend ALL their time playing ball. I can honestly say he helped to foster an interest in history that I have had for life.

Especially considering his dad and granddad, it is unbelievable he is down with this Neverland thing.

  7. Mr. Molovinsky,
We couldn't attend last night's meeting because of work. Can you tell us what happened?

  8. Didn't realize city wants to actually hold weddings in the Rose Garden. How will they handle guest list? Will there be a limit? They can't possibly plan to have hundreds of guests in that small garden area. The roses will be trampled in no time as will the grasses.

  9. Malcome Gross' grandfather's name is on so many brass plaques around the city's finest hospitals and community organizations and bridges. Doesn't his grandson have enough money? Why would he do this to his family's hometown? There's gota be something in this for him and we just don't know it yet. Now, if we read mayor gives concession to Fegleys that would not be a surprise.

  10. Oh, we did pass by that open construction lot someone mentioned at Doneyflake Lane and S. 12 Street in back of Mack World Headquarters. It is tall weeds, at least 4 feet, stone in piles, dirt in piles, junk everywhere. Those poor neighbors. One person trying to sell their home across from this
    eyesore.

  11. all together about a dozen people spoke out; mostly adjoining residents of cedar park, who were offended by not being informed about the plans and also the overuse of the park. council indicated it would summon the park's director, it is my hope they intercede and halt the plans until which time more input can be received from the citizens. i was disappointed a report was not in the paper, that would be the best vehicle to encourage people who feel they were shut out of the process.

  12. What a little taxpayer's money among friends?

PHOENIX -- A Social Security Administration motivational management conference held at a high-end Valley resort last week cost $700,000, the SSA told the ABC15 Investigators.

Costs for the conference at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa included airfare, hotel entertainment, dancers, motivational speakers, and food, an administration official said.

A spokesperson outside the SSA's Phoenix office declined to comment.

  13. Can someone please clarify the term 'overuse of the park.' now maybe i'm misinformed but i thought the idea behind parks was for them to be used and enjoyed by all members of the community....

  14. anon 9:35, i only print your comment to illustrate the type of comment which this blog will no longer accept, however, there is a group called friends of the parks, which helps enable the insanity now occurring. even the much touted master plan, see park and recreation website, says cedar park is overused. how paradoxical for the city to support riparian zones out from the creeks, and then want to fill in the remaining parkland with amusement venues. (as pointed out last evening by a concerned citizen to city council)

  15. the"antagonist' send me the following address to show that the plan states the park is used heavy, but not overused.
    http://www.allentownpa.gov/Government/DepartmentsBureaus/ParksandRecreation/CedarCreekParkwayRenovations/tabid/319/Default.aspx

    the actual address to the master plan is;
    http://www.gfnet.com/aprmp/english.htm
this document, used to justify current plans, clearly states cedar park is overused.

the top city plan is an horrendous overuse of the park. everything in it desecrates the park and especially the rose garden.

  16. I think rather than overuse a better term would be misuse. This goes well beyond the park system, take a walk anywhere in town and dodge discarded bottles, lunch bags, clothes, diapers, used fireworks. The parks system doed a good job in keeping them look predentable but the public could certainly cooperate more.
