Where's the Beef

Yesterday I asked Bill White and John Micek where's the local news? This question, was asked in the same vein, as the elderly lady wondering where the beef was in the hamburger commercial. Bill and John were too busy complimenting each other to answer. This evening I found an explanation buried in the Queen City Blog*:
" Jarrett Renshaw, Atown's new City Hall reporter, who arrived fresh from Easton's City Hall last week, is planning to do more with this in the next few days. Oh, and expect to see Jarrett here at the QCD as soon as he settles in, posting exclusive city news right here."
Hi Jarrett, let me introduce myself. I'm one of the nay-sayers who are responsible for Allentown not moving as far forward as it could because of our criticism. My very words alone, although seldom seen in the Morning Call, produce a negative energy with impedes the good intentions from City Hall from being fully realized. But, more important, let me explain who you are. You are the fourth reporter assigned to this administration since it began. Don't sign a long term apartment lease, because by the time you realize this Mayors' main accomplishment is producing power point presentations on his accomplishments, you will be reassigned to Shamokin to report on parallel vs. perpendicular parking.

  1. Jarrett, take my advice and stay as far away as you can from the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office. Trust me, you don't want to know anything about the 'Perpetrator Protection Mill' for select/connected homicidal drunk drivers that DA Jim Martin is running out of there. Ask Glenn Kranzley and Dave Erdman. It's off limits and for good reasons Glenn and Dave will explain to you ...

  3. Mr. Molovinsky:
With all due respect, I'd humbly submit that there's plenty of "beef" to be found in each day's edition of The Morning Call.
This morning's front page includes an extensive analysis of Barack Obama's performance in Pennsylvania by my colleague Josh Drobnyk; a lengthy feature on the achievement of an Easton HS graduate and a fairly interesting story about BethSteel's Charles M. Schwab.
As an addendum, this bureau produced a necessary story about yesterday's Senate vote on the state budget.
    I'd say that's not a bad day's work.
    Regards,
    John Micek

  4. mr. micek, thank you for your comment. my posting was directed at the lack of news about allentown. should not pennsylvania's third largest city have at least several articles a week on the activity, of lack of, by it's city government. should not occasionally those who do not believe the mayor can walk on water be asked for their opinion?

  5. Mr. Molovinsky:
Today I count seven, Allentown-specific stories on the Morning Call's Web page.
That seems a pretty goodly number to me, considering we've three or four counties cover in addition to national, international and state news.
    Cheers,
    John Micek

  6. mr. micek, in the newspaper, the wet kind one receives late on the doorstep, i see one allentown specific story; it concern the 30 laptops stolen from allen high. however, i didn't read it, because i learned about it yesterday on the allentown commentator, a yahoo group operated by nay-sayer scott armstrong. john, i'm not trying to be argumentative, but in-spite of being a blogger, i consider the paper the primary venue for news in the valley. if the other six are in the paper, i welcome the correction. are you counting morning call blog stories from the queen city, etc,?

  7. You're one up on me. We don't get the hard copy out here until a day or so later. But when I look under the "Allentown" part of our local news section on the Web, I'm seeing seven stories in that edition. And I'm not counting whatever's on QCD right now, though that does serve to augment our coverage.

  8. john micek, to put us on the same "page" i just went to the web site, allentown page. only one story concerns allentown, the stolen laptops, and that story is a day late from other sources.. the other stories concern schnecksville, easton, parkland, etc. now i know parkland is not allentown; when i ran for mayor, the only story the morning call wrote about me is how i'm not from allentown, because i owned a home in parkland. apparently, Allentown, on the web page heading, must refer to stories that are in the Allentown edition. THE TRUTH is, you have a paper which prints as many press releases from the administration as it does stories; furthermore, the mayor's positions have been repeatedly endorsed on the editorial page. you may rightfully take pride in the state coverage, but the city coverage should be an embarrassment.

  9. MM, keep in mind, The Morning Call is never wrong. About anything. Ever. Never. Even when they're dead-duck-deer-caught-in-the-headlights wrong they're not wrong. Ever. No way. No how. Can't happen. Ever.

  10. i wrote "the city coverage should be an embarrassment". although i stand by my dissatisfaction with the coverage for the city of allentown, i mean no offense to any particular writer. it's my understanding each of the reporters are wearing several hats, and i also realize the quantity of coverage is a management decision.

  11. Mike,

We could write a tome on stories the "Call" never wrote on developments, then we could write another one on the many puff pieces and rose colored editorials that supported the unsupportable.
In short, the paper is part of the problem here in the city.
