New Youth Programs

Mayor Ed Pawlowski has announced an Anti-Gang Initiative which will use Community Development Block Grants to fund youth programs. Time is short, applications need to be in by May 9th. Secular groups are encouraged to join with a faith based organization. Coaches and Churches should call Heidi Baer for more information at 610 437-7761 Play Ball!

  1. I'm all for youth sports and heard this program described before LC Comm'rs. My concern is that these programs will be publicly funded, and some of the participants are religious groups. I question whether the state should be funding different faiths.

  2. i think the intention of the program is to fortify programs which can provide healthy alternatives to kid's just hanging out. the faith-based groups already have an organization and often facilities going for them, but the grants are youth program specific. although there is only 60k available this year, it is a general open fund. a start up group, could get a grant this year, and then apply next year as a stand alone entity under a separate grant application. although i have issues with CDBG in general, i do see the value received in youth programming.

  3. This sounds like a good idea. I'm all for programs for kids. Kids just hangin out can result in vandalism and other crime.
