Molovinsky Called It Years Ago

In his post today, LVCI credits my long-standing concern about the Parkway wall and other WPA structures. The wall collapse this morning was catastrophic. A full post to follow on Monday.

  1. Ran by it last week and noticed the severe potential.

AS usual, *they* not only didn't listen to you- they ridiculed you for the warning.
Allentown is really starting to look like LOSER-VILLE.
People, quit marginalizing those who have a different opinion..stop and consider their input..
    Reality bites!

  3. Shocking to think that if you never maintenance structures they eventually fall apart. This is old stuff anyway. Who likes that? By the way, someone should cut all the weeds down there. It looks terrible.

  4. I like how wfmz says "City Council took action to save the failing section of wall Wednesday night, by allocating $23,850 for design services and construction documents needed to rebuild it." Yea, they saved the wall by taking action

  5. Michael predicted this not last year but almost 10 years ago now when he first initiated small groups of volunteers to meet in the Parkway. It did not take a rocket scientist to watch the destruction of this wall as the mortars used to do casual repairs often chipped away before each winter. Anyone who regularly runs or walks in the Parkway can attest to the deterioration of this wall, not to mention the enormously heavy city garbage trucks that now come through the park. How sad for parkgoers of all ages. Now someone writes folks can still come into the park from the "back side" of Lehigh Parkway South but according to warning signs posted at that entrance, no one but police and officials are permitted to use that entrance so that doesn't seem correct either. First the pool along MLK Jr. Drive; then the pool at Cedar Beach, now the Parkway. Who's watching out for the city's recreational resources? A small group of city parents are encouraging equality at the city's schools. A much larger group of parkgoers needs to do the same to protect the city's natural treasurers and protect them now, before it's too late!

  6. "quit marginalizing people with a different opinion"

    Why stop now?

This is the City Without Limits. Please continue to do whatever feels good. Thanks.

  7. There's no glamour in maintaining things, just creating and boasting about new, shiny stuff. There's more 'pop' when political types point out what new gifts THEY brought in. Emphasis on 'they.' Just wouldn't have happened without them!

As for Allentown's deplorable park conditions, maybe it's only fair we feel such wouldn't have happened without Pawlowski either.

  8. Maybe someone will shed light on why the city pulled its public works vehicles
of all shapes and sizes from the former municipal garage near Crum Stadium to now park all over the Parkway, often on once grassy meadows. Why can't these vehicles park in the Vultee Street facility instead of marring the Parkway? Recently someone cut down a few of the beautiful Evergreens behind the 19th Century Pennsylvania Dutch barn. Who did that and why? For decades city "Watershed" employees were respected and held in highest regard. They must be shaking their heads in sadness by what is going on.

  9. @12:45, like the wall, the city deferred maintenance on the building until it self destructed; in this case the roof, and the building became laden with mold.

  10. One of the morning papers does state the city will allow vehicles to utilize the Lehigh Parkway South extension entrance. This small roadway is now to carry traffic for the Mack Customer Service and Mack's Visitor Center, Parkway visitors and city employees, Police Academy visitors, busy commercial garbage truck traffic that utilizes the city's dumpster site adjacent to Mack, and Stanley Vidmar's manufacturing facility traffic.
