A Spokesman For Israel

In my post yesterday I engaged a gentleman critical of Israel and its leadership. In the comment section he accused Israel of nazi like behavior, for a unproven  allegation that some Ethiopian women where injected with the three month contraceptive Depo-Provera, while staying in a transition camp in Ethiopia awaiting transfer to Israel decades ago. If some women were given a temporary contraceptive without their full understanding, it's certainly not of no consequence. However, to compare that alleged occurrence to torturous medical experiments by Dr. Mengele in the concentration camps takes a jaded eye toward Israel and its people. Critics of Israel take delight in accusing Israel of nazi behavior.

Although I write about Israel here on my blog, I'm not qualified in anyway to be a spokesman for that country. However, today at 11:00 a.m. on C-Span, you can hear a qualified spokesman. Prime Minister Netanyahu will be speaking on what he believes is a matter of Israel's very survival.

  2. What IS the deal with all the anti-Israel stuff these days?

I, for one, welcome Mr. Netanyahu.

Partly because the British Lame Stream Media has as much credibility as the American Lame Stream Media.

Mostly because, as a Gentile, I fully support Israel's right to exist.

  3. It is a shame that the Prime Minister of a foreign country must come to The United States to explain to school the American People as to political instability of the world today.I for one applaud and welcome The Prime Minister's straight forward advice to The American people. I only hope our President can accept the voice of a statesman as to the dangers in the world today.I too support Israel's right to exist.

  6. Michael:

I'm shocked that you dismiss the source of the allegation as "unproven". The Israeli government admitted to the practice:

"Israel has admitted for the first time that it has been giving Ethiopian Jewish immigrants birth-control injections, often without their knowledge or consent.

The government had previously denied the practice but the Israeli Health Ministry’s director-general has now ordered gynaecologists to stop administering the drugs. According a report in Haaretz, suspicions were first raised by an investigative journalist, Gal Gabbay, who interviewed more than 30 women from Ethiopia in an attempt to discover why birth rates in the community had fallen dramatically.

One of the Ethiopian women who was interviewed is quoted as saying: “They [medical staff] told us they are inoculations. We took it every three months. We said we didn’t want to.” It is alleged that some of the women were forced or coerced to take the drug while in transit camps in Ethiopia.

The drug in question is thought to be Depo-Provera, which is injected every three months and is considered to be a highly effective, long-lasting contraceptive.

Nearly 100,000 Ethiopian Jews have moved to Israel under the Law of Return since the 1980s, but their Jewishness has been questioned by some rabbis....."

Why? Here's what Netanyahu has to say:

"Last year, the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who also holds the health portfolio, warned that illegal immigrants from Africa “threaten our existence as a Jewish and democratic state”.

I've given your links where this was written in Forbes and the Independent. Here's another from Haaretz:

    http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/israel-admits-ethiopian-women-were-given-birth-control-shots.premium-1.496519

Even the Forbes article I linked yesterday says this was reminiscent of Nazi eugenics practiced on Jews. Please address Netanyahu's comments and the Israeli government's admission to this activity. Why are you denying the truth of this?

Also, lest I get accused of anti-Israeli slander, this was uncovered by a Jewish reporter, Gal Gabby, whose apparent love of justice led to an investigation of the the nearly 50% drop in birth rates among the Fallashmura. Is this reporter to be dismissed as a self hating jew merely because they wrote about this?

  7. clarion, yesterday you commented on the previous post The fact that Israel relocated the Falashmura does not overcome their racist eugenics experiments to sterilize them. Nothing can overcome that and that's a huge contradiction to everything Israel purportedly stands for. that is quite a bit different from being given a birth control injection with an fda approved depo provera. after your accusation i did a search and found several references using the word "alleged". how prevalent it was, or how many women were injected, was also unclear.

as for jewish writers, no group is more self-critical than the jews. both israel bashing huffington post and al jazeera use jewish writers for their hit pieces. there is an abundance of self scrutiny in israel itself.

israel has a current border problem with africans, to which netanyahu was referring. the black ethiopian jews were purposefully bought to israel by israel. you seem very preoccupied with criticizing israel. i will be shortly examining obama's behavior, you're welcome to come back and comment on that.

  8. Reductionism is something that I notice in your comments (i.e. FDA approved contraceptive) and in the Forbes article (temporary birth control). In other words, reduce what is a obviously clear racist attempt at eugenics to "no big deal" or "it's not that bad" or "alleged". We both know full well had this involved European Jews, there would have been an unending hue and cry about the injustice of it all and a mere allegation bereft of any facts would sufficient to condemn the perpetrators. Here, of course, the evidence is "not sufficient" even though the Israeli government has admitted the practice and even with the statistical evidence of a drop upwards to 50% in births among Ethiopian Jewry. Most disturbing of all is that they're Jews, but just happen to be of another hue. Netanyahu's comments make no distinction between them and other African immigrants and the majority of Africans given this drug were in fact the Falashmura. He is clearly concerned about demographic change.

I made no accusation of eugenics, I made an assertion of fact about eugenics and the fact that it's made "more convenient" does not alter one thing about the intent. In addition, I stand on the assertion that it's racist and if this was done to other Jews who happen to be black, there's no telling the abuses that are heaped on the Israeli Arabs or the beleaguered Palestinians in the territories.

For there to be a substantial drop in the birth rate via use of the drug speaks directly to an official policy. In other words, the Israeli government told the doctors to use the contraceptive and Netanyahu's statement is the rationale behind the policy. That can not be reduced.

  9. clarion@10:21, you accuse me of "reduction" while you drone on with "repetition", which is out of context and time frames.

the injections were supposedly given in the transient camps in ethiopia, 20 and 30 years ago.

netanyahu comments about current illegal aliens from africa crossing israel's sinai border has nothing to do with the israeli falasha who originate from ethiopia.

i messaged you a link about current programs in israel to help the falasha overcome the disparities in educational background. while most immigrants to israel are highly educated, the original immigrants from ethiopia had an illiteracy rate of over 90%, which in turn put the next generation to disadvantage starting school. i will not be hosting further comments from you on this subject.
