The Inside Out Of Pawlowski's Victory

I suppose with a 61/39 win, Mike Fleck, Pawlowski's campaign manager, can still claim an overwhelming win. We here in A-Town know better. Michael Donovan, who didn't decide to run until the beginning of summer, was a restrained candidate. He was away for the summer, and didn't begin to campaign until September. In two months, with a little more than $10,000, he took a 40% bite out of Pawlowski. Both The Morning Call and Muhlenberg College did what they could to defend Pawlowski, by not sponsoring their traditional televised debate. Bill Heydt, former two term mayor, told me that he expected Donovan to get no more than 15% of the vote. What's the real message for an incumbent who used a $600 million dollar construction project for his photo backdrop? The message is that Allentown realizes that the arena will be no panacea for the city's real problem, crime, with no real solution in sight. It also says that the Transformation of Allentown is more in Pawlowski's head, than in the perception of it's citizens.

  2. an incredible turn out for Donovan!!! 10% of the money 10% of the people pulled 40% of the vote... a true sign that the 118,000 people in Allentown WANT a voice!

"If the Mayor wants to learn more about Civic Engagement, he can give me a call tomorrow." ~ Michael Donovan <--- This was epic!

  3. Let me get this straight. Pawlowski is on the Republican and Democratic ballot and only gets 6 out of 10 votes.4 out of 10 voters managed to write in Mr. Donavan's name. This clearly shows how little support the Mayor has.

  5. See I think Donovan got the republican and 10 to 15 % of the Democratic vote. With the results in Northamton Co.as proof I still believe with proper county party support Republicans can compete in Allentown. To me its all about the ground game and candidates. In the past good republican city council and mayor candidates came up short due to a much more effective GOTV effort by the Democrats.

  6. No matter how the spin goes there is a big oops in the mayor's gov plan.

Getting a 61% share against a weak opponent isn't a way to raise funds.

  9. I lean Dem but have never voted a straight ticket. I have never missed an election in 30 years of voting. I wish I could have voted for a Republican candidate for City Council. I declined to vote for any of the choices offered me for Allentown City Council as for the most part, other than Jeanette, I really do not feel that Council has either represented its citizens or has provided any meaningful check and balance to the Pawlowski Administration. I believe a lot of us would support a moderate Republican slate for City Council. DO you have any stats on how many ALlentown voters declined to vote for the candidates that ran?

  10. As others are correctly perceiving, the Pawlowski spin of "victory" is damage control for his dream of becoming Governor. He should have taken at least 80% of the vote against an opponent who spent far less money in a delayed campaign.

Stick a fork in him. Pawlowski is done insofar as being a viable candidate for Governor. He's lucky Donovan didn't start campaigning in January.

  11. I feel a great op ed in the MC coming on from Scott Armstrong after the dust settles from this interesting county and mayors race. In the past he has worked very hard for the city republican committee and I believe will agree the county party can no longer ignore and write off Allentown city voters.
