Thank You Senator Toomey

As the country is reeling from the cowardly terrorist act in Boston this week, local Senator Toomey exhibited extraordinary courage in co-sponsoring the gun background check. Toomey's base is ultra conservative, and he hurt himself with that constituency. With the proposal failing to pass the Senate, his credit with the gun control advocates will be a forgotten moment. Toomey said he was doing it because He felt it was the right thing to do. Apparently Capital Hill isn't ready for any changes in gun control, because the Toomey-Manchin amendment only closed gaping loopholes.

Toomey has alienated a large portion of his constituency with this maneuver, genuflecting to the left on this subject is a big reason why the Tea Party will be it's own entity in the very near future.

  2. I think Pat Toomey is teriffic. However,if we are going to regulate 'things' that kill people in large numbers then we might need to outlaw the automobile. After all, 'arms' ownership is a consitutional RIGHT, while driving a car is a 'privilege' confired by government. MM, I am a bit surprised by your position here. You anguish over some 70-year old steps in the park yet are willing to toss aside nearly 250 years of Constitutional governance. Thanks for the opportunity to contribute.

  3. @11:29, i'm an advocate of gun rights. since the most recent tragic event is connecticut, the gun scene has been in a frenzy. while the gun control group wants more controls, the controversy has created chaos in the marketplace. a decade of guns and ammo have been sold in the last three months. toomey's proposal only increased background checks to gun shows and internet sales, as already exists in gun stores. years ago when you purchased a gun it took three days for the check to be completed, now with electronic transmission, it takes 5 minutes. the background amendment was a reasonable compromise between the two factions, which didn't impede on gun ownership.

  5. @8:39, thinking gun right advocates supported the bill. because of the frenzy it's currently impossible to buy ammo, and gun selection is slim pickens. while this compromise would have subdued the debate, the gun control advocates will now push on harder than ever. eventually the courts will decide to hear the cases, then you will be submitted to gun control.

  6. you are assuming a lot Mr. Molovinsky that this one concession will end the gun control debate.

I offer that if we continue to allow our rights to get chipped away a little at a time, we will find ourselves with no rights at all.

  7. I am a gun owner and have pictures of myself handling and shooting guns, some of which are on Facebook. I will join my fellow citizens in earnest when I think that my government is taking my right to own a gun.

Meanwhile, I keep replaying the scenario where I am owning a gun (as part of a militia) to prevent my government from civil abuse ...and come up short - as the government is - and has been for a LONG time - much more fortified & and heavily armed than I'll EVER be - even if the whole neighborhood, all of Allentown, or even all of Pennsylvania joined in with me. So I admit to already be "outgunned" by the government I currently trust. (This doesn't mean I like all that my government is doing though).

As a gun owner and possible future purchaser of a gun, I want to see as many reasonable checks as possible and don't mind waiting a reasonable time while checks on my character and mental state are evaluated. I have nothing to hide and in deference to those folks who have suffered a great loss because of a firearm, I willingly submit to this sensible precaution.

The oft heard mantra "Guns don't kill PEOPLE, PEOPLE kill PEOPLE" is spot on! That's why we need to check PEOPLE and the background check as crafted if intended to do that.

  8. whethervain, prior to the recent gun buying frenzy caused by discussion of gun control, the background check took about 2 minutes. no waiting period; pick a gun, they phone in your name, you're approved in two minutes. now with the frenzy, it may take 10 minutes to get a background line, for a total of 12 minutes. all the toomey bill would have done is extent this check to gun shows, which are now exempt.
