The Fifth Estate-Blogging

Occasionally I post a comment on The Morning Call website. Invariably, Future Downtown Arena Attendee comes on to say that I live beyond the city borders and only received so many hundreds of votes in my independent bid for mayor. Last time she attributed my criticism of the mayor's initiative on sour grapes, for having lost the election. Of course there could be no other rational reason to oppose all those enlightened plans coming from city hall. In this town, with one party only on city council, and no scrutiny from the local press, this blog is often the epicenter of opposition. Certainly my associate from Nazareth, Bernie O'Hare, adds a larger voice on some issues. The noise Bernie and I make is eventually heard by our newspaper friends. Although you will seldom see mention of our blogs, they eventually adopt the issues.

  3. See that plaque you are holding? It is says opinion! Not Fact... you are not a journalist, you are a blogger. It is your opinion that you write... and most the time your opinion is wrong. So get off your high horse you grumpy old man.

  6. Taxpayers are not bottomless money pits. If MM's blog suggests government should not be allowed to waste money on the pipe dreams of politicians when it cant even provide the basics of public safety, his ideas dont seem unreasonable to me. His comments may be directed towards Allentown, however all levels and areas of government should take notice. MM's opinion is a fresh reality check to the spend now pay later mentality which seems to grip todays elected officials. We all pay taxes and we are all entitled to voice our opinion, unpopular or not. No one forces you to read this blog if you dont like it.

  7. It really is a disgrace that with no political opposition in Allentown that the newspaper doesn't provide more critical coverage and/or commentary.

I don't know where the notion that journalists are these pure, nonjudgemental people who write only the 'truth'.

In reality, rags like the MC have a distinct slant on the news. Simply by not publishing what they don't like, and covering stories that they want to promote. Also the choice of descriptive nouns, verbs, adverbs, color the truth in their stories.

Blogs have enabled people to communicate what they really think is happening, without relying on the media. Notice that both TV news, and print media keep declining in ratings and sales.

You can get much more from reading the Drudge Report and FoxNews, than you get from the NYT!

I enjoy reading your blog every day, and hope that you continue to provide the type of information that our local paper seems to mostly downplay. Should I ever see you around town, I would like to tell you that in person.

    Thanks and keep it up.

  11. Like anyone REALLY cares what a Future Downtown Arena Attendee of the American Hockey League's Assisted Living Team thinks anyway ...

... Some genuine ice hockey fans think that the Phantoms Product Label has fallen and will NEVER get up.

At least, not without the major financial assistance of Government all at enormous expense to the Taxpayer!

    :-)

  13. This is definitely a biased town politically. But you know the reason the pud gets away with it is becuase so many of the spineless corporate leaders in this area will do his bidding.

If an individual speaks up publicly it would not suprise me if that persons employer was summarily dressed down by hisself.

The corporation then surreptitiously and purposefully puts the employee through action plan hell. Expecting of course the employee will be more concerned about survival than political views and will abandon the later to make sure they are not "fired" for trumped up unjust charges.

What they fail to realize is they, survival and political views, are one in the same for many.

The time "to pay the piper" eventually raises it's ugly head. You can only claim to be a corporate savior of mankind for so long until folks catch on and the dues must be paid for ones egregious and most purposeful transgressions.
