No Ageism in Allentown

If Allentown's new freshman City Councilman looks long in the tooth in this Morning Call file photo, you should know that the picture is from his previous campaign, in 1995. Frank Concannon will turn 89 this February. Although he didn't campaign for his victory last month, he has been chewing his food and moving his bowels mostly on his own. Either Allentown is completely free of ageism, or we no longer have a two party system. At least one new member will be appointed by Pawlowski in early 2012, as D'Amore assumes his Magistrate position. The taxpayers will save election costs and time by Pawlowski appointing his Council members.

  1. Mike,

Frank is a real team player who demonstrated his commitment to the cause by never asking any questions or doing a single audit of anything as city controller. This sort of fidelity to the machine isn’t uncommon in the Queen City and is apparently appreciated by the city’s Democrat voters. Too bad.

  2. scott, a confession; often to make a point, i even wince at the harshness of my own words. i believe that 89 is too old for anybody to get elected to city council, and start a four year term. i believe mr. concannon's election indicates that most democrats just pull the straight democratic lever (now they click on the straight party icon) i wish mr. concannon well, but would rather have him run for office at the senior center.

  3. Mike,

Frank’ s election is proof that Pennsylvania needs to rid itself of the straight party vote option.

  4. scott, i agree. at least on the old mechanical machines, every candidate's name was in view as you entered the booth. the new electronic machines immediately prompt you to vote straight party. i've been told that they do show you a list of the straight party slate before you vote, but you never see the other alternatives.
