Line In The Sand

It appears that Mubarak will step aside within days, and his newly installed Vice President, Omar Suleiman, will be "transition" President. Hopefully this will satisfy the Egyptian street. Suleiman was formally in charge of Egyptian Intelligence, and is a well known commodity in Washington. The Muslim Brotherhood have declined to say that they would honor the treaty with Israel, or even recognize Israel's right to exist.

  1. This is good news. The longer this crisis goes on the greater the risk of the radical fundamentalists controlling the situation. I am sure I will be called "stupid, uninformed and naive" again by those who always see the cup as half empty, but I strongly support our President as he tries to make the best of a very dangerous situation.

  2. it's my understanding that the strong military hierarchy has been, is, and will be in control of egypt. if things proceed as indicated in this post, hopefully the anti-murbarak demonstrators will stand down, calm and order can be restored.

  3. GL,

Don't you ever get tired of casting yourself in the victim role?

    Where is the diversity, dude?

Support your HYPOCRITICAL President as he makes recekless and dangerous public statements all you like.

I am still waiting for your hero, PHARAOH 0-BAMA, to publically criticize U.S. Rep STEVE COHEN for violating his Civility Standard as outlined at the Tucson Pep Rally / Memorial Service and calling Republicans "Nazis"...

Well, well. What have we here.

I thought the Community (Global) Organizer who could not even be bothered to finish his first term as a freshman U.S. Senator before campaigning for the White House was the SMARTEST President EVER?

Or is it that Obama WANTS crisis and chaos in order to exploit situations to increase his own prestige and personally popularity as he looks ahead to 2012?

    Inquiring minds want to know...

    Well, well.

The inexperienced, overwhelmed Community Organizer who had two years as a freshman U.S. Senator before seeking the highest office in the land starts to assign blame - AS USUAL.

  6. Why cannot folks who post on this seminal blog criticize our elected leaders and fellow posters without the heavy sarcasm, name-calling and just silly kindergarten level posts? The issues the Tribune of the People posts are important and worthy of serious responses. Some folks need some lessons in civility and politeness.

    .
The most you can hope for is he doesn't do too much damage. Obama has been Muslim Brotherhood friendly and while they may not have enough power to control any new "democratic" government that might form in Egypt, they could be a key support group for any larger coalition that gains control which would give them a strong say in policy. Isreal friendly policy is not the MB's strong suit.

They can go through the motions, then quietly create an incident that would get the population whipped up against Israel.
    .
You know Mike, I keep going back to the feeling Obama engineered this mess. he's up to something, I am not sure what.

Dinesh D’Souza thinks he wants to pull out of the mid-east all together.
“So Obama might encourage the democracy movement, not because he’s an idealist about democracy, but because he might approve of the overthrow of a pro-American dictator and a reduced footprint for America in that region.”

Obama's foreign policy always struck me as odd. In his mid-east game, Israel could end up being collateral damage or expendable.

  11. I listened with interest the interview of an Egyptian journalist who dismissed the comparison of the current situation with that of Iran and the fall of the Shah. She said the current protesters are young, secular, smart and strong and use modern technology to organize and champion economic reform and civil rights. She thinks those who fear the radical Islamists such as the Brotherhood (I must admit I am one) are doing the bidding of Mubarak and, like old men everywhere, are always fighting the last war.

  12. gary, if you looked at the photographs on the masthead of the huffington post in the last week,(huffington is as liberal as it gets) most of the protesters don't look young, secular, smart, etc. the elbaradei/brotherhood is the only organized group(s) which could emerge. i seen many pictures and footage, and haven't seen the demographic of which this reporter speaks.

  13. MM: I see the same pictures. I hope the pictures are not representative of the new wave. Pictures of young thoughtful, quiet protestors rarely get published. I hope you are wrong. And, I assume you and your friends will think I am naive.

It is possible the younger people of Eygpt have learned the lessons of Iran.
    .
The key is can secular democratic forces form an effective political organization. Warm wishes are meaningless if they do not have boots on the ground.
    .
Obama's push to have the Muslim Brotherhood included gives that group a certain strength they may not have had if he kept them at arm's length.

I agree 100% U.S. Rep Steve Cohen should be officially reprimanded by Pharaoh Obama for calling Republicans who oppose the Obamacare monstrosity ruled unconstitutional "Nazis".

Absolutely unfathomable and so immediate, this distasteful and unseemly violation by U.S. Rep Cohen (D) of the Obama Civility Mandate as issued and expressly outlined at the Tucson Pep Rallly!

  16. Assumptions are never necessary when copious amounts of evidence are ALWAYS about and offered so freely without any coercion.

I thought I remember reading that this blog did not meet some incoherent Progressive Liberal Democrat double standard and that some readers would not be returning?

Oh well, pre-schoolers will never be able to carry my 'kindergarten' jockstrap no matter what stunts are pulled in misguided efforts to prop up a Failed Presidency (and Main Stream Media).

    Go FC Che Guevara!

  17. I guess people want to say what they want to say before being dressed down and condescended to by certain individuals who post to this blog.

They are sarcastic since they are frustrated with how they know they will be reacted to and responded to when they do post.

It happens all the time on the local blogs. It becomes about the personalities and not the principles.

See how this post is responded to.

  18. The peaceful Anti-government protester movement that is going on right now in Egypt would not have been attempted had not Iraq been freed from Hussein. These protesters remember the "purple" fingers of the voting public that emerged at the polling places in Iraq and now they want their freedom. They also know that the Egyptian military is pro-American and because of that, they have a better chance to succeed. No so in Iran! I would hope that the Iranians will rise up against their leaders soon. If Egypt succeeds in replacing their government with a more moderate government that doesn't suppress the people, the Iranians may follow.
When the Iranians started a small revolt, they received no help from Obama, not even a kind word. When Obama says something, believe the opposite. When Obama was elected, he made a trip to Israel and put on a "yarmulke"! He thought that would make him one of them. Not long after when Netanyahu was elected, he came to the US to visit with Obama and was shunned instead of being greeted as a prominent leader. I wouldn't trust Obama on anything he says. I judge him by his actions. The Democrats have not been Israel friendly for many years. The only friends Israel has is the Republican party.

  19. "doesn't suppress"
    That should be "oppress"
In a way, I admire Israel! They have a cause, a reason to fight back against those that want to drive them into the sea. What do we have? We have a divided people and a divided government. The Democrats are ignoring the wishes of the majority of the people. They want us to be like the Socialist countries. The Republicans are divided into 2 groups, the tea party faithful who want to listen to the people and the Republican establishment who spend more time fighting the Democrats instead of shrinking government and the debt. We are the losers!
