A Family Conversation

My aunt and I were talking the other day, and she doesn't understand what happened to Allentown.

I sat there patiently and tried to explain some of it to her.

She's from a time when school safety issues had to do with children and cars, not gangs.

She insists that there must have been Martians on that space ship Max Hess brought to town, or something.

  1. My grandmother grew up in Beaver Falls, PA. When her father put in an indoor commode she was aghast, "why would anyone want to do that in the house?" She also told me how her father was upset that the Pollocks, Hunkies, Kikes and Dagos were coming to town and Beaver Falls was going down hill. More bars, drunks, crime, you name it. If only Beaver Falls was like it was in 1890.

  2. there is a name for places that stayed that way, they call them vocation spots.

once again you insinuate that any longing for the calmer past is based on prejudice.

  3. To the Progressive Liberal Democrat left, EVERYTHING on the planet revolves around prejudice.

But, they can save us if only we let them spend us into oblivion...

  4. What an outstanding photo!

I was a safety patrol on that very corner...just like my older brother had been before me.

This is the best City of Allentown blog ever, by a country mile.

  5. a little defensive MM---just a true story just like yours. As to Anon 9:40, prejudice is generalizing to an entire class of folks based on experience with some. You do not know me or my views. Try to respond to arguments and not just name-calling.

  6. Gary -

Whether you want to admit it or not, your implication is that MM's (and others) dissatisfaction with what Allentown has become is somehow related to race and prejudice. This is not the first time you have tried to smear those who disagree with you politically, but I can always hope it will be the last.

A few weeks ago, you swore off this blog and others. But you're still here. Why haven't you lived up to your word?

  8. Exactly what name were you called, other than Progressive Liberal Democrat, which you, yourself have proudly stated you are here before?

Another lame attempt at a smear job, dude...
