Liberal Dilemma

Those of you who honor this blog with an occasional glance or two, will recognize this posting as my first foray outside of Lehigh Valley Politics. However, my motivation was local, today's Op Ed piece, entitled "Time will erode impact of Palin's rhetoric." * The piece was written by Nichola Gutgold, a local professor who is author of "Paving the Way for Madam President". Apparently when Ms. Gutgold wrote "Paving the Way..." she never had in mind a conservative, pro life, gun toting moose hunter. When Hillary Clinton spoke several weeks ago about cracking the glass ceiling, she didn't imagine a Sarah Palin. It seems democratic liberal women are more suited to govern than their conservative counterparts, who should apparently concentrate on motherhood. Nearby, democratic women had no problem electing Marjorie Margolies Mezvinsky to Congress with eleven children. I must give credit to Geraldine Ferraro. She acknowledges the accomplishments of Ms. Palin and warns Joe Biden not to underestimate her.

  1. Palin is tapping into an overwhelmingly strong feeling that Washington has no idea what real life is like. Palin does (including family problems that hit all to many of us), and people are responding.

Is she qualified today to be President? No. But her aggregate experience is no different than that of Obama, and last I checked he's at the top of the D ticket.

The Democrats underestimate her (and that resentment) at their peril.

  4. mike,my view is that Palin is tapping into the same well that propelled obama into the limelight. This whole election has been nothing more than an american idol type competition.Looks, style, and oration has trumped experience and knowlege of the issues.Do we really need a constitution in this day of marketing, hype, and public relations? Sure scares me.

  6. Michael I could not agree more with your words.
Mr Banker is she qualified to be president, arguably, who is? But she is as good as Obama.

  7. Bob, I actually agree w/ Bill Clinton on this (God help me) - he said a few months ago that - and I'm paraphrasing here - no one is qualified to be President. To me, the biggest issue in a Presidency is who the President chooses for his cabinet and advisory positions. They are at times as much or more important than the individual.

I agree w/ you as well, she and Obama are equally qualified (or not).

  8. Probably the reason many democratic, liberal women have such a problem with Sarah Palin is because she is "wrong" on EVERY issue that is important to us... I can assure you that if there was a man who was as absurdly conservative as she is, we would be just as disgusted with his positions as we are with hers. As far as I can tell, the media were the only people harping on that disgusting "stay at home to raise her children" line, I never heard any female democrat - prominent or not - utter anything even close to that kind of criticism.

and talk about husbands, at least sarah palin's didn't steal money from his wife's family and end up in jail.
