  1. What's your take on TC Salon buying the Shanty? I like it, I think it's a good business for that location. Hopefully they'll partner w/ the other businesses there to give people an incentive to stay awhile.

  3. OK, once one of the babe's with the fancy nails is done at TC Salon, what is she to do to spend her million$? Cup of coffee across the street? Then what? The old Shanty should have been pitched solely as another restaurant. Hundreds of people daily used to frequent the Shanty...from 11 a.m. till closing. And it was a big draw for out-of-town money in the form of Muhlenber College parents, alumni and other visitors. How many of that crowd will be getting cucumber facials?

  4. as i commented on mrs. dotties blog, i suspect there may be some city involvement or incentive with TC buying the shanty now, it was on the market for over two years. the original shanty was sold by the saylor family to another restaurant operator from nyc, who i feel damaged its reputation with lessor quality. the free market place spoke and no other restaurant operator was interested. the TC salon is very successful and at the end of the day i must congratulate those responsible for this deal, it's certainly better for 19th st. than autozone

  5. Congratulations on the TC deal on 19th Street and I want to thank everyone who came out to the UPWARD BOUND ALLENTOWN event. MM was there, Tony Phillips came through, and even Charlie Dent made an appearance as well as other city officials! The music, food, and vendors had a great time on a beautiful day and although it wasn't as crowded as Musikfest, we all had a great time!

  6. Anon 455, you're right - another restaurant would have been fantastic. But MM is right, it didn't happen and there was more than enough time for it to do so.

Keep one thing in mind - babes who get cucumber facials and their fancy nails done have discretionary $$$ to spend. Like I said, I hope TC works w/ the other businesses to keep them there spending some of that $$$.

  7. Its is inaccurate to say "no other restaurant operator was interested".

Several restaurants were interested and one was even hoping to move forward at the time this deal was taking place.

At the end of the day, this is a better use of the property than a new restaurant who would have to build a new client base during difficult economic times.

TC has a solid base of clients who will certainly drive one extra (maybe one less in some situations)mile to 19th St.

The cross promotion possibilities between the Salon, the Botique, and the jewelers in the neighborhood are endless.

  8. Michael I like you wonder why TC was not interested in the site before. I also believe that the mayor had a financial hand in this. Another Brew Works

  9. "Babes with cucumber facials" is exactly the scenery this neighborhood needs. that alone might be attracting more shoppers.

they will represent a lot more attractive crowd of shoppers than an autozone.

(PLEASE PARDON MY CYNICISM. SURELY THE GALS ARE NICER TO LOOK AT THAN DIRT-UNDER-THE-FINGERNAILS CAR PARTS BUYERS. LOL.

they will represent a lot more attractive crowd of shoppers than an autozone.
(PERHAPS, BUT RETAIL IS ALL ABOUT NUMBERS, AND I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE A 7-DAY A WEEK FOOT TRAFFIC THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER THAN A RESTAURANT. CALL ME SENTIMENTAL, BUT DON'T THINK TC WILL CONVERT 19TH ST INTO SOHO.

  11. maybe not . . . but i will be a lot more likely to sit outside at the coffee shop across from the theater and watch all the hot girls than i would people trudging out of autozone with their oil filters and wiper blades.

Are you sitting outside the coffee shop with binoculars?

I don't think you'd be able to see anyone coming out of either TC or the Auto Zone without them.

  13. I think the Tattoo parlor directly across the street from the Shanty will have the best view of the "hot girls" and "babes with cucumber facials."
